Present Progressive

Uses of the Present Progressive It is used to describe an action that is in progress. It emphasizes that the action is taking place now. –I am walking to the clothing store. –Estoy caminando a la tienda de ropa. It can be used to stress that an action is continuous. –I am learning Spanish –Estoy aprendiendo español.

How to form the Present Progressive It is formed by using: estar (to be) + present participle -er & -ir verbs = -iendo -ar verbs = -ando They are equivalent to -ing endings in English I am (estar) walking (present participle) We are (estar) writing (present participle) You are (estar) eating (present participle)

Revisiting the verb Estar (To be) yo = estoy tú = estás usted = está nosotros = estamos ustedes = están

Special case If your verb has two vowels (a, e, i, o,u) next to each other, the ending is –yendo instead of –iendo Example: –Oír, Creer, Leer, Traer (only works for –er & -ir verbs) Yo estoy leyendo.
