Indirect Object Pronouns Everything you need to know

What is an indirect object? An indirect object is “to/for whom” an action gets performed in a sentence. EX: I throw roses to clowns. Who gets the roses? The clowns do, they are in the indirect object of the sentence.

Try another one… Cinderella does the chores for her stepsisters. Write the Indirect Object on your whiteboard.

A simple trick The Indirect Object is usually preceded by to/for in a sentence. Same thing in Spanish, the Indirect Object will be preceded by PARA or A. Look at our sentence in Spanish: La Cenicienta hace los quehaceres para sus hermanastras. Can you find the Indirect Object?

Escribe el objeto indirecto en tu pizarrón Martina compra los globos para su hermano. Tú sacas la basura para tu madre. Ellos compraron un pastel para su abuela. Yo mandé las flores a Renato.

Indirect Object PRONOUNS Replace indirect objects. Change position in Spanish sentences. Go before conjugated verbs. Can go on the end of verb pairs and gerunds. Go on the end of positive orders.

IOP’s en español ME to/for me NOS to/for us TE to/for you OS to/for you LE to/for him, her, you LES to/for them

Miramos un ejemplo Yo lanzo las flores al payaso. Find the IO? Replace it with an IOP? Yo lanzo las flores al payaso  LE Move the pronoun in front of the verb. Le lanzo las flores.

Uno más El turista presenta un plátano a los monos. Identifica el objeto indirecto  (los monos) Choose the correct pronoun  LES Re-write the sentence El turista les presenta un plátano.

A Practicar La profesora da tarea a nosotros. Identifica el objeto indirecto  (NOS) Escribe la frase: La profesora nos da tarea.

A practicar Tú sacas la basura para tu padre. Identifica el objeto indirecto  Escribe la frase de nuevo: Tú le sacas la basura.

A Practicar El mesero sirve la comida a los clientes. Identifica el objeto indirecto  LES Escribe la frase: El mesero les sirve la comida.

Did you notice… When you replace Indirect Objects with pronouns in Spanish we remove the A/PARA as well? You will also remove el/la/los/las/mi/mis/tu… and any other adjectives that describe the nouns you replaced.

Miramos un ejemplo Juan escribe una carta a su querida abuela cubana. When you use “HER” (LE) to replace his dear Cuban grandmother, the LE takes care of the whole thing. It’s a good idea to underline what you want to replace in sentences so you don’t accidentally include extra words.

Checamos la respuesta Juan escribe una carta a su querida abuela cubana.  LE Juan le escribe una carta. All those words converted into one LE Don’t forget to move the pronoun in front of the conjugated verb.

Verb pairs. (put the IOP on the end, or in front of the conjugated verb) Vas a dar las invitaciones a los invitados.

One more thing… LE and LES as pronouns can be kind of vague if you don’t already know who you are talking about. Spanish speakers “clarify” third person vague- ness by adding in the Indirect Object again. EX: Le doy los chocolates a mi abuela. I give the chocolates to my grandmother.

¿Qué me dices? That’s right, we take out the Indirect Object. We replace it with a pronoun. Then, we put it back in for clarification, or for emphasis. Clarifiers can be a + él, ella, ellos, ellas or any persons name. EX: Yo le doy un hueso a Wolfie.

Adding on the clarifier… Makes no sense to us. Why take it off? If you are going to put it right back? Some things just require acceptance. Y ahora, les doy la tarea a mis estudiantes.
