Agenda Catalyst 5 Rules Review 5 Convection 5 Introduction 20 Question Tree 5 Sorting Practice10 Objectives We are learning about… Heat energy is transferred by convection, conduction, and/or radiation. We will be successful when we can… Classify examples of convection, conduction, and/or radiation. HEAT energy!

Thermal Energy Thermal energy is another word for heat energy Molecules are always moving = KINETIC energy ! Thermal energy = how FAST molecules move…  FASTER molecules = higher temperature ! 3

Energy Transfer The Law of Conservation of Energy says… Energy canNOT created OR destroyed…but it can be transferred  thermal energy too! Thermal energy will travel from an area of high heat to an area of low heat …but NEVER the other way around… Energy can be transferred in 3 ways: 1. Conduction 2. Convection 3. Radiation

Conduction Imagine it is very cold outside and you walk to school. As soon as you come inside, I give you a mug of hot chocolate. What happens to your cold hands?

Conduction Conduction is the transfer of energy from one molecule to another Occurs when molecules bump against each other MuSt Be ToUcHiNg! Conduction takes place in solids, liquids, and gases Example : metal is a better conductor than wood / plastic Example !

Convection Imagine you are in a pool on a hot day. You are hanging out in a group of friends. All of a sudden, the water gets warm around you. Your best friend shouts out, “Ew… Gross!” What do you think happened?

Convection Convection is the movement of heat by a liquid such as water or a gas such as air. Liquid or gas moves from one location to another, carrying heat along with it Movement of heated water or air = CURRENT ! How is this different than conduction? Example !

Radiation Where does all of Earth’s heat energy come from? Conduction and convection require matter (solid, liquid, or gas) to transfer heat. However, there is almost no matter between the earth and the sun. So how does the sun get heat energy to Earth?

Radiation Radiation is the transfer of energy by light waves. Radiation is unique because it does NOT require any matter to transfer heat energy It can happen in empty space! Example !

Heat Transfer Can we have 3 methods of heat transfer at once? YES !

Heat Transfer

Question & Sort 6 minutes !

Hypothesize! Instrucciones: ¿Cuál tipo de utensilio que será más caliente después de estar sentado en una olla de sopa caliente durante 20 minutos? ¿Cuál será más frío? ¿Cuál tipo de transferencia de calor es esto un ejemplo de?
