El Condicional

Objetivos  Demostrar la comprensión del condicional.  ¿Cuando usamos el condicional?  ¿Cómo conjugamos verbos regulares en el condicional?  ¿Cómo conjugamos verbos irregulares en el condicional?

Criteria for Success  En un 80% of más: –Puedo identificar cuando usar el condicional. –Puedo conjugar verbos regulares en el condicional. –Puedo conjugar verbos irregulares en el condicional.

¿Qué es el condicional?  Frequently, the conditional is used to express probability, possibility, wonder or conjecture, and is usually translated as would, could, must have or probably.  The student said that he would study one more hour. (probability, possibility)  What time could it have been? (wonder, conjecture)  He must have been at home. (wonder, conjecture)  We were probably busy when you called. (probability, possibility)

Use the conditional tense to express what would happen were it not for some certain specific circumstance:  Yo viajaría pero no tengo un pasaporte. - I would travel but I do not have a passport.  Con más dinero, yo compraría un carro nuevo. –With more money, I would buy a new car.  En tu lugar, yo estudiaría más. –If I were you I would study more.

To express hypothetical events which may or may not occur:  Sería interesante estudiar chino. - It would be interesting to study Chinese.

To express the future from the perspective of the past:  Yo sabía que abrían la tienda a las siete. –I knew that they would open the store at seven.  Tú no dudabas que pagaría la cuenta. –You didn’t doubt that I would pay the bill.

Use the conditional tense to express probability or wonder in the past (speculation about the past):  ¿Dónde estaría Matilde? –I wonder where Matilde was.  Estaría en casa –She was probably at home.  ¿Qué hora sería cuando el me llamó? –I wonder what time it was when he called me.  Serían las ocho. –It was probably eight.

To express what would be done in a particular situation:  ¿Hablarías ingles en España? –Would you speak English in Spain?  No. Hablaría español. –No. I would speak Spanish.

For polite use to soften requests:  Me gustaría ir contigo. –I would like to go with you.  ¿Podrías prestarme tu lápiz? –Could you lend me a pencil?  Deberías llegar a tiempo. –You should arrive on time.

To ask for advice:  ¿Cual compraría usted? –Which one would you buy?  ¿Cual libro leerías tú? –Which book would you read?

To express an action which is contrary to fact:  Si yo tuviera tiempo, iría al cine esta noche. –If I had time, I would go to the movies tonight. In this example what tense/mood is tuviera conjugated in?

¿Cómo conjugar verbos regulares en el condicional?  You add these endings to the infinitive of any verb. ía ías ía íamos ían bailaría bailarías bailaría bailaríamos bailarían All verbs have the Same endings In the conditional Tense.

¡Ejemplos!  ¿Qué hora sería? What time could it have been?  Serían las cinco. It was probably five o'clock  Por favor, ¿podría decirme a qué hora abre la gasolinera?  Could you please tell me what time the gas station opens?  ¿Hablarías inglés en España?  Would you speak English in Spain?  No. Hablaría español.  No. I would speak Spanish.
