Cognitive Dev. in Adolescence Des. Cognitiva en la Adolescencia

Piaget’s Cognitive Dev. Theory Sensorimotor (0-2); Pre-Operational (3-7); Concrete operational (7-11); Formal operational (11/12 to adult)

Hypothetical- deductive reasoning: the ability to think scientifically & apply the scientific method to cognitive tasks Razonamiento hipotético-deductivo: la capacidad de pensar científicamente y aplicar el método científico a las tareas cognitivas

Pendulum Experiment Piaget showed children/adolescents a pendulum. Asked “What determines the speed”? Heaviness, weight, length of string?” Concrete operational: random approaches (alter more than 1 variable at a time); cannot explain the correct answer (i.e. – length of string) Formal operational: will change one variable at a time to get to the right answer; first, tests weight; then length of string 5 min 37 sec

Concrete operational thought Versus Formal operational thought 1 min 45 seconds 1 min 47 seconds

Piaget’s Formal Operational Stage / Período de las operaciones formales Begins around age 11 / 11 años… Los modos de pensamiento caracteristicos de la ultima fase en el desarollo de la inteligencia en el niño The capacity to think systematically, on an abstract & hypothetical plane. (love, justice, freedom, etc.).

Propositional logic- adolescents can apply logical reasoning to both abstract & real events/situations.

“FO” thinking does not fully develop until late adolescence. The adolescent becomes a “dreamer” b/c they mentally construct a utopian or ideal society.

The imaginary audience -when an adolescent imagines that everyone else is observing & concerned w/ their actions.

2) The personal fable - when an adolescent’s egocentricity leads them to believe that their experiences are special & unique & no one else would understand.
