¿ ¡¿ ¡ Grammar Why does Spanish have upside down question and exclamation marks? Answer: The upside-down or inverted question marks and exclamation marks of Spanish are unique to the languages of Spanish. They make a lot of sense: When you're reading, you can tell long before the end of a sentence whether an exclamation or question is coming as in Spanish it isn’t always obvious. Example: Carolina está bien.Carolina is well. In Spanish the words stay the same when they are when asking the question. ¿Carolina está bien? Is Carolina well? The same applies to exclamation marks. The inverted one at the beginning of the sentence lets you know that the speaker is expressing some kind of emotion whether surprise, anger or whatever. Use formal: Adults you don't know well People in some position of respect, i.e. the President, a teacher or boss, a police officer, etc. Use informal: family friends people your age or younger Formal and Informal Spanish has a formal and informal way of expressing itself. In Spanish there are two ways of expressing ourselves. These are the formal way and the informal way. There are exceptions when people who are in higher level than you ask to address them in an informal way.
