Feb. 8, 2015 Today is the Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time. We want to examine the reading from Job 7:1-4, 6-7. Then we will examine the Psalm 147. Finally we will study the Gospel of Mark 1:29-39 for today. A healthy Christ-centered spirituality emerges, one that knows how to act when going through hard times.

The reading from Job suggests that he had a bad day, as we all do every now and then. Remember the Lord allowed the devil to test him to see if he were really blameless and upright, and faithful unto God (Job 1:12). He sees life as a drudgery. He goes from feeling like a slave to feeling like a hireling, waiting for payday. Meanwhile, he is miserable, and troubled. When in bed he wonders when he will arise. He is depressed. He is without hope, and does not think he will ever find happiness.

But he doesn’t give up. He said: “ ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return; the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord’. In all this Job did not sin nor did he say anything disrespectful of God” (Job 1:21-22). He continued to praise the Lord no matter what.

The responsorial Psalm 147:1-3 reminds us that we need to praise the Lord who heals the brokenhearted. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” The Lord sustains the lowly. We can be sure that he casts the wicked to the ground. So, cheer up, stop feeling sorry for yourself. Seek the Lord while he may be found. Start praising the Lord, and he will break that darkness, and his Light will shine upon you. That is true wisdom, to which there is no limit.

The Gospel of John 3:16 says that God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. “He emptied himself of his divinity, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:6-7). He taught us how to serve others in their need. “When Jesus saw the crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things” (Mark 6:34). That is what Jesus did at the synagogue.

This one day he came back, entered the synagogue, taught as usual, and then visited Peter (Mark 1:29). They immediately told him about his mother-in-law, who was sick with fever.

Jesus approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. The fever left her and she waited on them. The vividness of this account shows Mark must have been an eyewitness.

The version of Luke 4:39 says Jesus stood over her, and rebuked the fever, and it left her. The fever was seen as a personal force to be rebuked. It shows Jesus battling with the powers of evil, forcing them to release their prisoners. Demons are hostile to God. Therefore, their overthrow is a must. It is part of the Messiah’s work. Sometimes he does it with words (as in Luke), and sometimes he does it with actions (as in Mark, where he takes her by the hand).

Let us ask him to come to our town, because we are in great need. Let us ask him to come and heal us. Let us bow down and worship, and humble ourselves in adoration, as we witness his great deeds even in our own day! If he did yesterday, he can do it again. Remember Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus is the same, yesterday, today, and forever!”

Vamos a acercarnos al Señor, y unirnos a aquellos que andan buscando al Señor. Vamos a pedirle que venga a nuestro pueblo, que tanto lo necesita. Vamos a pedirle que venga y nos sane. Vamos a adorarlo, humildemente, al ser testigos de sus grandes maravillas hoy en día. Si lo hizo ayer, lo puede hacer otra vez. Hay que recordar Hebreos 13:8 “¡Jesucristo es el mismo, ayer, ahora, y para siempre!”
