The verbs we are working with are IRREGULAR verbs. PATTERN. These verbs are considered “irregular” because they DO NOT HAVE a SER is almost always an irregular verb. IR has no stem so it, too, is almost always irregular.

SER and IR are conjugated EXACTLY THE SAME in preterite tense. So… how are you going to know to translate the verb as “was/were” versus “went”?
