For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine, and you said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”

Reflections on Luke 7: 31 - 35 Reflexiónes en Lucas 7: 31 - 35 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Sept. 19, 2007 To understand this passage better, we need to read the story before this story. In Luke 7.28 Jesus said: “of those born of women, none is greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God, is greater than he. The law and the prophets were until John, since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and every one enters it violently.”

Matthew 11.l4 says John the Baptist was the Elijah who was to come (before the Messiah). The tax collectors and harlots believed him. They were baptized with the baptism of John, when they saw John Baptist come in the way of righteousness. The Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, even when they saw it, did not repent and believe him.

Mateo 11.14 dice que Juan Bautista fue el Elías que iba a venir (antes del Mesías). Los recaudadores de impuestos y las prostitutas le creyeron. Fueron bautizados con el bautismo de Juan cuando vieron que venia en el camino de santidad. They are like children, sitting in the market place calling on one another: “We piped to you and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.” For John the Baptist came eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say: ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and you say: ‘behold a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.”

This refers to the table-fellowship of Jesus with tax collectors and sinners. He chose a dangerous way of love. He knew that in the end love would triumph. He broke with the rules of the day that insured a world without trouble. In their hypocrisy, they would not treat with sinners, so as to “stay clean”. Yet in their hearts they were full of violence. They would violently kill John the Baptist, and Jesus, and Stephen. The Kingdom of God thus suffered violence.

Note that joy was key notion of the fellowship of Jesus Note that joy was key notion of the fellowship of Jesus. It spoke of the age to come. In contrast, the Pharisees were the watchdogs of orthodoxy (correct teaching). They were severe in their interpretation of the Law. They always found fault with Jesus no matter what he did. And they expected everybody to do the same. So it was a point of maximum offense for Jesus to enter into table-fellowship with tax collectors and sinners.

Jesus in effect was challenging the deep-rooted convictions of his enemies that led to rules that governed relations between men. Their conditions were very difficult to meet. They were not prepared for any challenge. So they were equally offended by John the Baptist, who was an unreasonable ascetic, living in the desert, wearing a camel’s skin for clothes, and eating locusts and honey. Jesus, whom they saw as a libertine, offended them also.

Jesús en efecto puso en reto las convicciones arraigadas en sus enemigos que llegaban a reglas que gobernaban relaciones entre los hombres. Sus condiciones eran muy difíciles cumplir. No estaban preparados para ningún reto. Y por eso se ofendieron por Juan Bautista, que era un ascético, viviendo en el desierto, vistiendo con cuero de camello y comiendo saltamontes y miel. Igualmente, se ofendieron por Jesús, porque lo veían como un libertino.

The punch line is verse is verse 35: “Wisdom is vindicated by her children.” To vindicate means you prove that you are right, and that your opponents are wrong. Jesus was wisdom personified. His followers down through the centuries now know that he was right, and that his enemies were wrong.

La línea clave es el versículo 35: “La sabiduría de Dios ha quedado vindicada por todos sus discípulos.” Vindicar quiere decir que pruebas que tú estas bien, y que tus opuestos están mal. John the Baptist said that he who has the bride is the bridegroom (Jesus); the friend of the bridegroom rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice (John 3.29). The Church is the bride. And we are the Church.

One of the early Church Fathers, Maximus of Turin says (in Sermon 42 One of the early Church Fathers, Maximus of Turin says (in Sermon 42.5), that “it is good for us to dance because of this marriage, for David, both King and Prophet, danced before the Ark of the Covenant ‘with much singing’ (2 Sam 6.14). In the Spirit he saw Mary, born of his own line, brought into Christ’s chamber. He says, “And he, like a bridegroom, will come forth from his chamber, like a strong man, to run his course with joy” (Psalm 19.5). The Prophet David danced, and so can we!

We rejoice because we know that Jesus in the Eucharist celebrated the marriage supper of the Lamb. “Let us rejoice and exult and give him glory, for the marriage feast of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure” - for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints” (Revelations 19.7-8). Let us pray that God make us worthy!

Por eso regocijamos porque ya sabemos que Jesús en la Eucaristía celebra las bodas del Cordero. “Hagamos fiesta, saltemos de gozo y démosle a él la gloria, porque han llegado las bodas del Cordero; La esposa se ha preparado, le han regalado un vestido de lino puro, esplendente.
