El presente de los verbos hacer, poner, salir, traer, tener, y venir “Yo –go verbs” By: Malinda Seger Coppell High School Coppell, TX

Primero, vamos a aprender los verbos.

hacer to make, to do HINT (PISTA): A computer hacker has a lot to make or do.

poner to put, to place HINT (PISTA): You PUT the pony (pone) in the stable at night.

salir to leave, to go out HINT (PISTA): Sal (salir) is the last to leave the party.

traer to bring HINT (PISTA): Tracy tries to bring the food on a tray.

tener to have HINT (PISTA): I have ten dollars in my ten fingers.

venir to come HINT (PISTA): My cousin Venny always comes late to the party.

hacerponer salirtraer “yo” The verbs hacer, poner, salir and traer are regular in all forms with the exception of the “yo” form. Memorize the conjugation of the following verbs:

Hacer – Yo hago Tú haces Él hace Ella hace Ud. hace Nosotros hacemosNosotros hacemos Vosotros hacéisVosotros hacéis Ellos hacenEllos hacen Ellas hacenEllas hacen Uds. hacenUds. hacen to make, to do

Poner – Yo pongo Tú pones Él pone Ella pone Ud. pone Nosotros ponemosNosotros ponemos Vosotros ponéisVosotros ponéis Ellos ponenEllos ponen Ellas ponenEllas ponen Uds. ponenUds. ponen to put, to place

Salir – Yo salgo Tú sales Él sale Ella sale Ud. sale Nosotros salimosNosotros salimos Vosotros salísVosotros salís Ellos salenEllos salen Ellas salenEllas salen Uds. salenUds. salen to leave, go out

Traer – Yo traigo Tú traes Él trae Ella trae Ud. trae Nosotros traemosNosotros traemos Vosotros traéisVosotros traéis Ellos traenEllos traen Ellas traenEllas traen Uds. traenUds. traen to bring yo Did you notice the extra letter “i” in the yo form? It helps the verb form to sound better when it is pronounced.

Tener – Yo tengo Tú tienes Él tiene Ella tiene Ud. tiene Nosotros tenemosNosotros tenemos Vosotros tenéisVosotros tenéis Ellos tienenEllos tienen Ellas tienenEllas tienen Uds. tienenUds. tienen to have Do you remember the verb “tener”? Everything that is irregular fits inside the shape of a boot so teachers like to call these verbs “boot verbs”. The e  ie change does not happen in the yo form, but instead it has a g. This is why I call it a “fluffy boot verb”, or “una bota fofa” ( a Sra. Seger invention ☺).

Venir – Yo vengo Tú vienes Él viene Ella viene Ud. viene Nosotros venimosNosotros venimos Vosotros venísVosotros venís Ellos vienenEllos vienen Ellas vienenEllas vienen Uds. vienenUds. vienen to come “Venir” is almost like “tener”. It is a “yo – go” verb and is also an e  ie verb in the “boot”. Venir is another “fluffy boot verb”, or “una bota fofa”. Everything that is irregular fits inside the shape of the boot or shoe. Remember, “stinky stuff happens inside a shoe”.

En fin, what do all of the verbs have in common? Yo hago Yo pongo Yo traigo Yo caigo Yo tengo Yo vengo YOG The YO form has a G.

Yo salgo ahora porque tengo que ir al aeropuerto. Yo hago la maleta y pongo mucha ropa para la playa. La traigo al aeropuerto. Yo no vengo a tu clase de español mañana porque yo voy a Cancún para las vacaciones. ¡Adiós, amigos!

caer to fall HINT (PISTA): Carrie’s car falls off the cliff.

Caer – Yo caigo Tú caes Él cae Ella cae Ud. cae Nosotros caemosNosotros caemos Vosotros caéisVosotros caéis Ellos caenEllos caen Ellas caenEllas caen Uds. caenUds. caen to fall Did you notice the extra letter “i” in the yo yo form again? Caer is not a verb that you have to know for the chapter but it is easy to learn and is useful.
