23 Él les dijo: Mi copa ciertamente beberéis, pero sentarse a mi derecha y a mi izquierda no es mío el concederlo, sino que es para quienes ha sido preparado por mi Padre. 24 Al oír esto, los diez se indignaron contra los dos hermanos.

25 Pero Jesús, llamándolos junto a sí, dijo: Sabéis que los gobernantes de los gentiles se enseñorean de ellos, y que los grandes ejercen autoridad sobre ellos. 26 No ha de ser así entre vosotros, sino que el que quiera entre vosotros llegar a ser grande, será vuestro servidor,

25 But Jesus summoned them and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt. 26 But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;

27 whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. 28 Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Reflections on Matthew 20:17 - 28 Reflexiónes en Mateo 20:17 - 28 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Feb. 20, 2008 To begin, let us remember that in Matthew 19:16 we have a story before the story we read today. It was about a rich young man who wanted to know what he had to do to have eternal life.

When Jesus told him to keep the commandments, the young man replied that he had kept them since his youth. Jesus then looked at him with love (Mark 10:21). “You lack one thing: go, sell what you have, and give it to the poor… and then come follow me.” The young man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

St. Chrysostom says they made their request because they thought that now was the time for crowns and rewards. They wanted the privilege of first seats and honors even before the contest had begun.

Chrysostom reminds us that now was the time for struggles, contests, toils, sweat, wrestling rings and battles. And that is what the three Passion predictions were all about. The Lord’s hour was close at hand. During Lent it is so appropriate to remind ourselves of these things. Suffering precedes glory.

Priority in the kingdom of Jesus is related to the witness of martyrdom. It could include death. That is what the Lord meant when he asked them: “Can you drink of my cup?” (Matthew 20.22). They answered: “We can.”

St. Paul says we can serve others by exercising our gifts to the best of our ability. “In the Body of Christ, (1 Corinthians 12:28), God has appointed in the church first Apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then healers, helpers, administrators, and speakers of various kinds of tongues.”

This in reparation of or in compensation for the sins of others. At Mass, the priest reminds us the words of Jesus:
