El imperfecto Español 3-3 Unidad 2

In Spanish, there are two simple tenses used to express the past tense. They are the preterite, which we learned in the last unit, and the imperfect, which we will be learning in this chapter. The imperfect is the easiest tense to form in Spanish. As usual, there are endings for -AR verbs and endings for -ER and -IR verbs. What makes the imperfect so easy to form is that there are only three irregular verbs! In addition, there are absolutely NO stem changes in the imperfect.

-AR To form the imperfect of AR verbs, you drop the -AR and add the imperfect endings. aba abas aba ábamos abais aban

-AR jugaba jugabas jugaba jugábamos jugabais jugaban hablaba hablabas hablaba hablábamos hablabais hablaban

-ER -IR To form the imperfect of ER and IR verbs, you drop the -ER or -IR and add the imperfect endings. The endings for ER and IR verbs are the exact same. ía ías ía íamos íais ían

-ER -IR me sentía te sentías se sentía nos sentíamos os sentíais se sentían leía leías leía leíamos leíais leían

Irregulares - Ir iba ibas iba íbamos ibais iban

Irregulares - Ser era eras era éramos erais eran

Irregulares - Ver veía veías veía veíamos veíais veían

Usos del imperfecto The imperfect is used to express repeated or habitual actions in the past. The following are indications that you will need to use the imperfect in a sentence. always often frequently many times each/every during the era… during siempre a menudo con frecuencia muchas veces cada _______ en la época durante

Usos del imperfecto In addition to the words and expressions listed above, the imperfect is ALMOST always used for past descriptions! Instances such as: Ella era alta Yo estaba enfermo/a. Mi hermano tenía 14 años. Hacía frío. Era el 5 de diciembre. Yo siempre quería un perro. Nosotros estábamos en la escuela. El estaba contento.
