11 The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity - greedy, dishonest, adulterous - or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ 13 But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’

14 I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Gospel of the Lord

Oct. 27, 2013 This is the Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time. The readings for the Mass teach us that there is wisdom in being humble as we pray like the poor. Let us reflect on the readings and consult the Fathers of the Church.

Hoy es el Trigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Hoy es el Trigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Las lecturas de la Misa nos enseñan que hay sabiduría en ser humildes al rezar como los pobres. Vamos a hacer una reflexión sobre las lecturas, consultando a los Padres de la Iglesia temprana.

The first reading from the Book of Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18 is considered part of Wisdom Literature. It reminds us that God always hears the cry of the oppressed. He is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow as she pours out her complaint. They were the poor of the Old Testament. It says the Lord will not delay in judging justly and affirming the right. That is why the Church has always sought social justice, in the Name of the Lord.

Psalm 51:17 says: “A broken heart you will not turn away”.

In the Gospel of Luke, the Lord speaks about the prayer that is pleasing to God. This parable is about humility. The word “humility” comes from the Latin “humus” (the ground, the earth at our feet, the soil). It speaks of what is low, mean, common. It means staying close to the ground, to people, to everyday life, to what is happening with all its “down-to-earthiness”. It means you are close to reality, it means being truthful.

En el Evangelio de Lucas, el Señor habla de la oración que complace a Dios. Esta parábola es de la humildad. La palabra “humildad’ viene de la palabra en Latín “humus” (terrenal, la tierra a nuestros pies). Habla de lo que es bajo, común y corriente. Quiere decir estar cerca de la tierra, a la gente, a la vida diaria, a cosas ordinarias que están sucediendo. Quiere decir que estas cerca de la realidad; quiere decir ser verdadero.

Jesus said that if we continue in his word, and are truly his disciples, we would know the truth, and the truth would set us free” (John 8:31). The truth is we all have pluses and minuses. A person who is self-righteous is blinded by his pride and fails to see his minuses. He only sees his pluses. His pride is evident in his mental attitude. He cannot see beyond his nose. He keeps thinking about how good he is. He has a “better than you” attitude. He wants others to be like him.

Jesús dijo que si continuamos en su palabra, y somos verdaderamente sus discípulos, conoceremos la verdad, y la verdad nos va hacer libre (Juan 8:30). La verdad es que todos tenemos lo positivo y lo negativo. Una persona que se justifica a si mismo esta ciego por razón de su orgullo y no ve sus puntos negativos. Solo ve sus puntos positivos. Su orgullo es evidente con su actitud mental. No puede ver más allá que su nariz. Sigue pensando que bueno es. Tiene una actitud que piensa ser mejor que los demás. Quiere que todos sean como él.

Such a person is preoccupied with his own achievements Such a person is preoccupied with his own achievements. He becomes the measure of all things, not God. Someone said: Pride is a one-man parade. He is the spectator, and he applauds himself on how well he is doing. Naturally, he over-esteems himself. That was the problem with the righteous man in the parable.

Tal persona esta preocupada con sus propios éxitos Tal persona esta preocupada con sus propios éxitos. Piensa que él es la medida de todas los cosas, y no Dios. Alguien dijo que el orgullo es como un desfile de una sola persona. La misma persona es la que se mira con atención, y se aplaude a si mismo por ir tan bien. No le importa lo que los demás piensen. Eso era el problema con el fariseo en la parábola.

In point of fact, God is the measure of all things, not man, and not me. In Philippians 2:3-8, we see that St. Paul urges us to do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but to look out for the interests of others. “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant. He humbled himself, being obedient unto death”.

En realidad, Dios es la medida de todas las cosas, y no el hombre, y no yo. En Filipenses 2:3-8 vemos que San Pablo nos urge a hacer nada por razones egoístas, sino que buscar el interes de los demás. “Tengan esa mente entre ustedes, que es suya en Cristo Jesús, que, aunque era en la forma de Dios, no contó igualdad con Dios algo de qué agarrarse, sino que se anonado a si mismo, tomando la forma de un siervo. Se humillo a si mismo, siendo obediente hasta la muerte, y muerte en una cruz”.

Acknowledge the truth about who you really are, pluses and minuses. God already knows, so there is no sense in pretending we are somebody else. Do not go into low self-esteem, which is another problem.

¿Cómo podemos eliminar el orgullo en la oración ¿Cómo podemos eliminar el orgullo en la oración? Hay que ser lo que eres. Reconoce la verdad sobre lo que realmente eres, con puntos positivos, y puntos negativos. Dios ya lo sabe todo, de manera que no tiene cuenta pretender ser algo que no eres. Ten cuidado no llegar a auto-estima bajo, que es otro problema.

He knew he was a sinner, and he acknowledged it. He simply bowed down in worship, knowing that God knows all things, even the secrets of our hearts. He did not feel there was any need to say anything. Silent prayer can be most profound. It is like the deep waters of the sea, silent, like God. Remember Matthew 10:26 “Nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known”.

Me parece que por eso es que Jesús aprobó del recaudador de impuestos en la parábola. No trato de impresionar a Dios. Sabia que era pecador, y lo reconoció. Sencillamente se inclino en reverencia, sabiendo que Dios todo lo sabe, hasta lo mas secreto del corazón. No sintió necesidad de decir algo. La oración silenciosa puede ser la mas profunda. Es como el agua profunda del mar, silencia, como Dios. Recuerda Mateo 10:26 que dice: “Nada esta cubierto que no se va a revelar, ni escondido que no se va a conocer”.

Martyrius (Book of Perfection 78), an early Father of the Church, observes: “Whoever offers to God sacrifices of praise, should be very alert for the ambushes of the evil one. Satan lies in ambush read to catch you by surprise at the very time of thanksgiving. He will get up and accuse you before God, just as he did with your fellow Pharisee in the temple.

Martirius (Libro de Perfección 78), uno de los Padres de la Iglesia Temprana, observa: “Aquel que ofrece a Dios un sacrificio de alabanza, debe estar muy alerta a las emboscadas del maligno. This time, he will not be puffing you up with pride over good works, as he did with the Pharisee, but he will be making you drunk with a different kind of pride. He makes you drunk on pride in the lovely and sweet sound of your own voice, the beauty of your chants that are sweeter than honey and the honeycomb. The result is that you do not realize that these belong to God, and not to yourself.”

Like the tax collector and the Holy Father Pope Francis, acknowledge that you are a sinner, and praise and thank God continuously for all the good things he has given you. Amen!

Al igual que el publicano y el Santo Padre Francisco, reconoce que eres un pecador, y alaba y dale gracias continuamente a Dios por todas las cosas buenas que te ha dado. ¡ Amen !
