3 Subió Jesús a una de las barcas, la de Simón, le pidió que la alejara un poco de tierra, y sentado en la barca, enseñaba a la multitud. 4 Cuando acabó de hablar, dijo a Simón: “Lleva la barca más adentro y echen sus redes para pescar”. 5 Simón replicó: “Maestro, hemos trabajado toda la noche y no hemos pescado nada; pero, confiado en tu palabra, echaré las redes”.

6 Así lo hizo y cogieron tal cantidad de pescados, que las redes se rompían. 7 Entonces hicieron señas a sus compañeros, que estaban en la otra barca, para que vinieran a ayudarlos. Vinieron ellos y llenaron tanto las dos barcas, que casi se hundían. 8 Al ver esto, Simón Pedro se arrojó a los pies de Jesús y le dijo: “¡Apártate de mí, Señor, porque soy un pecador!”

9 Porque tanto él como sus compañeros estaban llenos de asombro al ver la pesca que habían conseguido. 10 Lo mismo les pasaba a Santiago y a Juan, hijos de Zebedeo, que eran compañeros de Simón. Entonces Jesús le dijo a Simón: “No temas; desde ahora serás pescador de hombres”. 11 Luego llevaron las barcas a tierra y, dejándolo todo, lo siguieron.

Luke 5:1 - 11 1 While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. 2 He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets.

3 Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. 4 After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.”

6 When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”

9 For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, 10 And likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

Feb. 10, 2013 This is the Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time. In the Gospel for Mass today we see that the Apostles were fishing all night and caught nothing. When Jesus asks them to try again, all of a sudden they catch so many fish their nets start to break. Peter immediately recognizes this as a miracle and is acutely aware that he is a sinner. This indicates that in the things of God, without Jesus we can do nothing. However, with Jesus we can do all things. Let us examine what the early Fathers of the Church have to say about this incident, and make applications for ourselves.

Cuando Jesús les pide que hagan la lucha una vez mas, repentinamente agarran tantos pescados, que las redes comienzan a rotarse. Pedro inmediatamente reconoce que esto es verdaderamente un milagro, y reconoce que es un pecador. Esto indica que en las cosas de Dios, sin Jesús no se puede hacer nada. St. Augustine (Sermon 248.2) notes that there are two catches of fish by the Apostles at the command of Jesus in the Gospels: One before the resurrection, and one after the resurrection. The parallel passage is found in John 21:1-11. The two catches stand for the whole church, both as it is now, and as it will be at the resurrection of the dead. Now, there are countless numbers of good and bad. At the resurrection, it will contain only the good, and a definite number of them.

One boat represents the faithless synagogue and the other represents the faithful church. Jesus chooses Peter’s boat and forsakes the boat of Moses. “The church is called out into the deep, delving, as it were, into the profound mysteries of the heavens, into that depth concerning which the apostle says, “O the depths of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God (Romans 11:33)!” What can be more profound than what Peter says to the Lord: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”?

Cyril of Alexandria (Commentary on Luke, Homily 12) makes the following observations. There were so many fish, that Peter could not bring it in by himself. He had to call for help from his companions. He called those who shared their labors in fishing. We know that many have taken part with the holy apostles and their labors, and still do so, especially those who inquire into the meaning of what is written in the Gospels.

Yet, besides them there are also others: the pastors, teachers, and rulers of the people, who are skilled in the doctrines of the truth. The net is still being drawn, while Christ fills it, and calls to conversion those who are in the depths of the sea.

We need to work on awareness of the fact that God is still in our midst working wonders as he governs the universe, and sustains us in the midst of his creation. He still continues to work miracles, wonder-healings, and acts of power.

Necesitamos luchar para estar consciente de que Dios todavía esta en medio de nosotros haciendo maravillas al gobernar al universo, y al sostener a la creación. Él sigue haciendo milagros, curaciones maravillosas, y actos de poder.

The sense of awe still comes whenever God is present The sense of awe still comes whenever God is present. It can be at the “Aha” moment of discovery in any field. It can be at a moment of prayer anywhere. Our experience of awe has occurred in front of the Blessed Sacrament, or at the moment of consecration at Holy Mass, or in a retreat, when we receive an insight into ourselves in a moment of grace. Moments of conversion are always moving.

St. Ignatius of Loyola observes that only God can move a soul by grace without a previous cause. It is called consolation. In such a case, there can be no deception, since it can precede from God our Lord only. A person who receives such a grace must consider it very attentively.

It is a very special moment, and must be cautiously distinguished from the period that follows it. This is important because sometimes people make resolutions and plans that are not granted by God. They may come from our own reasoning on the relations of our concepts and the consequences of our judgments (Spiritual Exercises #336.8).

Let us continue to pray daily, and pray much, and expect that the Lord will still move in our hearts, in spite of the fact that we remain sinners. St. Peter did not fail to acknowledge his own sinfulness. Yet, God honored his humility, and gave him so many favors. This gives me a lot of hope! Lord, be merciful to me, I am a sinner!

Vamos a seguir rezando diariamente, y mucho, esperando que el Señor nos mueva en el corazón, aunque permanecemos siendo pecadores. San Pedro no deja de reconocer sus propios pecados. Sin embargo, Dios honra su humildad, y le concedió tantos favores. ¡Esto me da esperanza! Señor, ¡ten compasión de mí, que soy pecador!
