 To form this tense, it takes two words. First a form of the verb estar: estoy, estás, está, estamos, están  Then the ___ing form of the verb ____ing = ando – for a verb ending in –ar ____ing = iendo – for most ending in -er or -ir How it’s formed

 trabajar  trabaj+ando = trabajando  Hablar  habl+ando = hablando  nadar  nad+ando = nadando  estudiar  estudi+ando = estudiando Samples with -ar verbs

 volver  volv+iendo = volviendo  comer  com+iendo = comiendo  vivir  viv+iendo = viviendo  salir  sal+iendo = saliendo Samples with -er & -ir verbs

Use forms of “estar” with the progressive  Yo estoy  Tú estás  Él/Ella/Usted está  Nosotros/Nosotras estamos  Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes están Don’t forget the ones the have accent marks! I’m studying. I'm = Yo estoy Studying = estudi+ando = estudiando Yo estoy estudiando.

Are you (inf.) listening? Are you = ¿Estás___ tú? listening = escuch+ando=escuchando ¿Estás escuchando tú? What if it's a question? Just move the pronoun after the verb.

Irregular - Leer He is reading the newspaper in the kitchen. He is = Él está reading = le-yendo the newspaper = el periódico in the kitchen = en la cocina. Él está leyendo el periódico en la cocina.

Irregular - Ir We are going. We are = Nosotros estamos going = yendo. Nosotros estamos yendo. (Hardly ever used. Go or going to is more often the present tense of “ir.” Nosotros vamos.

Irregular - Dormir Is she sleeping in her bed? Is she = ¿Está ___ ella? sleeping = durm+iendo = durmiendo in her bed = en su cama ¿Está durmiendo ella en su cama?

Irregular - Repetir The students are repeating. The students = Los estudiantes are = están repeating = repitiendo Los estudiantes están repitiendo.

We are eating hamburgers. You guys are not listening to music. They are writing to their friends. Ustedes no están escuchando música. Nosotros estamos comiendo hamburguesas.
