Unidad 1: Lección 3 El uso de las palabras porque and Como para explicar estados

We are going to use the words porque and Como to explain why certain states exist: (Estar) + adjective/adverb + porque + clause. Como + clause, + (estar) + adjective/adverb.

Porque = Because You can use the word porque for connecting clauses to explain why someone felt, used to feel, feels, would feel, or will feel a certain way.

The word porque can be followed by any verb in any tense that makes sense. You can use the same or different subjects in each clause. Estamos enfermos porque tenemos catarro. Estabas cansado porque trabajaste mucho. Estoy orgulloso porque seré estudiante universitario.

(Estar) + adjective/adverb + porque + clause. Estoy alegre porque no estoy enfermo. Mi madre estaba preocupada porque yo salí con mis amigos anoche.

A Uds. les toca en parejas Estamos cansados porque__________. Tú estarás preocupado porque __________. Mis amigos estaban nerviosos porque _______________________. Yo estuve enfermo porque __________. Mis amigos estarían alegres porque _____.

Como = As (Because at the beginning of a sentence) You can use the word Como at the beginning of a sentence to explain why someone felt, used to feel, feels, would feel, or will feel a certain way. A comma is required before adding the second clause.

The word Como can be followed by any verb in any tense that makes sense. The subject of each clause can be the same or different. Como Uds. tienen frío, no están comódos. Como eras tímido, estabas nervioso. Como seré médico, estaré ocupado.

Como + clause, (estar) + adjective/adverb. Como comí demasiado para el almuerzo, estoy enfermo. Como sus hijos están locos, la madre está enojada.

A Uds. les toca en parejas Como _________, mi padre estaba tranquilo. Como _____________,tú estarás cómodo. Como__________, mis padres estaban entusiasmados. Como _______________, yo estuve enfermo. Como _________, Ud. estaría orgulloso.

A Uds. les toca In writing, add an adjective/adverb and a logical clause to explain the reason why certain people felt, used to feel, were feeling, feel, are feeling, would feel, or will feel a particular way. Then state your sentences out loud to a partner. Dont forget that you can use no before the verb for a negative statement. Estamos ___________porque_____________.
