What is the present progressive? The present progressive is a verb tense. Verbs that end in –ing are progressive. This is because these verbs represent an ongoing action: He is walking. We are listening. She is writing.

About the present progressive: Words that end in –ing are called present participles. The present progressive is a compound tense, meaning it takes two verbs to form it: I am writing. am is the helping verb writing is the present participle You are speaking. They are shopping.

How this tense is formed: Part One: Estar (The helping verb) estoy estás está estamos estáis están Part Two: Pres. Participle Drop the AR, ER or IR and add: AR verbs: ando ER and IR verbs: iendo

This means that to say working: Drop the AR from trabajar. Add ando. Your new word is trabajando (working). Now add a subject: I am working. Estoy trabajando. NOT Soy trabajando. They are working. Están trabajando. NOT Son trabajando.

Form the present participle: limpiar pasear visitar lavar celebrar decorar cortar sacar preparar limpiando paseando visitando lavando celebrando decorando cortando sacando preparando
