 Use the subjunctive in adjective clauses to express that the existence of someone or something is uncertain or indefinite.  Ejemplo:  ¿Hay un banco por aquí que tenga cajero automático?  What is uncertain?  Is there a bank, very uncertain

 The subjunctive is used in an adjective (or subordinate) clause that refers to a person, place, thing, or idea that either does not exist or whose existence is uncertain or indefinite.  Ejemplo:  Necesito un libro que tenga información sobre Venezuela.  What is uncertain?  I need a book, very indefinite-  There are a lot of books about Venezuela!

 Otro Ejemplo:  Necesito el libro que tiene información sobre Venezuela.  What are the differences in these sentences?  I need the book that has information about Venezuela, very definite/specific-  There is that one book about Venezuela!

 Más Ejemplos:  Quiero vivir en esta casa que tiene jardín.  Quiero vivir en una casa que tenga jardín.  What are the differences in these sentences?  Esta= this, very specific, this particular house that has a garden  Una= a, any house that has a garden

 The subjunctive is commonly used in questions with adjective clauses when the speaker is trying to find out information about which he/she is uncertain.  However, if the person answering the question knows the information, the indicative is used.

 Por ejemplo:  ¿Hay un parque que esté cerca de nuestro hotel?  Sí, hay un parque que está muy cerca.  No, no hay un parque que está muy cerca.  No sé, si hay un parque que esté muy cerca.

 Here are some verbs which are commonly followed by adjective clauses in the subjunctive: to look for to know to not find to have (helper verb) to need to want

1. Necesito una persona que (poder) cantar bien. 2. Buscamos a alguien que (tener) paciencia. 3. ¿Hay restaurantes aquí que (servir) comida japonesa? 4. Tengo una amiga que (sacar) fotografías muy bonitas. sirvan pueda saca tenga

5. Hay una carnicería que (estar) cerca de aquí. 6. No vemos ningún apartamento que nos (interesar). 7. ¿Hay alguien que (decir) la verdad? 8. Conozco a un estudiante que (comer) hamburguesas todos los días. diga está come interese
