3 O You’ve probably noticed that there are two ways to express “for” in Spanish: O Por O Para O In this slide show, we’ll look at how these two prepositions are used.

4 What’s the difference? O There is a difference in the way that the objects of the prepositions are perceived. O Rather than give you a long theoretical explanation, I’ll give you an acronym for para: P.E.R.F.E.C.T.

5 P.E.R.F.E.C.T. O Use PARA when talking about: O Purpose: “in order to”: used together with an infinitive. O Effect that something has on something else. O Recipient O Future dates, deadlines, or events O Employment O Comparison O Toward a specific place

6 Purpose O Purpose: “in order to”: used together with an infinitive. O Estudio para sacar buenas notas.

7 Effect O Effect that something has on something else. O Voy a la universidad para ser abogado criminal.

8 Recipient O Recipient: the person or entity that receives something: O Este regalo es para ti.

9 Future O Future dates, deadlines, or events O Esta tarea es para mañana y el proyecto es para el lunes.

10 Employment OEOEmployment OTOTrabajo para un restaurante chileno.

11 Comparison O Comparison O Para un niño de cinco años, lee y escribe muy bien.

13 What about ‘por’? O Essentially, por is used in all instances when P.E.R.F.E.C.T. does not apply. O However, if you like to collect acronyms, here is one to use with por: A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D O This acronym covers many, but not all, of the main uses of por. There are many idiomatic expressions that use por.
