Capítulo 8B El condicional – “would_____”

Use the conditional tense to express what would happen.

Cool thing #1: ¡Do not remove infinitives! ¡En serio!

Cool thing #2: There is only one, yes one, set of endings for –ar, -er, -ir, and irregular verbs. ¡1 set of endings only!

Cool thing #3 ¡Stem-changers no existen!

Cool thing # 4 You already know the endings: They are the same endings as the -er/-ir imperfect endings.

So then…..let’s put all that information together!

Conjugation íaíamos íasíais íaían Infinitive +

Conjugating an -ar verb hablaría hablarías hablaría hablaríamos hablaríais hablarían Yo te hablaría por celelur pero lo perdí. I would speak to you by cell phone but I lost it.

Conjugating an -er verb volvería volverías volvería volveríamos volveríais volverían Volveríamos a las doce pero no tenemos carro. We would return at 12 but we have no car.

Conjugating an -ir verb me dormiría te dormirías se dormiría nos dormiríamos os dormiríais se dormirían Ella se dormiría en el sofá pero es muy incómodo. She would fall asleep on the sofa but it is very uncomfortable.

And now……cool thing #5!

Irregulares – They are the same as the future irregulars!!! Tener – tendr Poner – pondr Venir – vendr Salir – saldr Querer – querr Poder – podr Saber – sabr Caber – cabr Haber - habr Decir – dir Hacer – har Valer - valdr Ellos tendrían un fiesta por sus amigos pero no tienen dinero. They would have a party for their friends put they have no money. ía íamos ías íais ía ían + Just add the conditional endings!

Use the conditional tense to express what would happen under certain conditions. Nos gustaría pasar este curso. We would like to pass this class. Vivirías en Espana? Would you live in Spain? ¡Eso sería magnífico! That would be magnificient!

¿Te casarías conmigo? Would you marry me? Ellos no trabajarían en este lugar. They would not work in this place. ¿Les interesaría ir de compras en Boca Raton? Would it interest you (all) to go shopping in Boca Raton?

* ¡¡Cuidado!! When the verb translates as “would” but refers to “used to”, the imperfect tense will be used. Mi papá siempre me daba dinero los sabados. My dad always would (used to) give me money on Saturdays.

Noten la diferencia entre el imperfecto y el condicional: Imperfecto: Paco comía todos los días a las ocho. (would eat) Condicional: ¿Comería Paco en ese restaurante sucio? (would eat) ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre las dos oraciones?

¡El Fin!
