Mark 13:24 - 32 24 Jesus said to his disciples: “But in those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’ with great power and glory,

27 and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky. 28 Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that he is near, at the gates.

30 Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 32 But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father”.

Reflections on Mark 13:24 - 32 Reflexiones en Marcos 13:24 - 32 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Nov. 18, 2012 Today is the Thirty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time. It is almost the end of the liturgical year, so the Church is thinking of what Jesus said about the end of time. The passages from the Bible read at Mass need to be explained. They are mysterious. Let us try to reflect on what they mean.

The first reading is from the Book of Daniel 12:1-3 The first reading is from the Book of Daniel 12:1-3. It was written about 140 years before Christ. It is part of what is called Apocalyptical Literature. The word apocalypse means it half reveals, half conceals. That is how Apocalyptical Literature works: it half reveals, and it half conceals. What you bring to the reading is important.

If you are living a good and holy life, the readings for today will be a consolation. However, if you are not following the teachings of the Lord, the readings will strike you with horror and disgrace. Also, notice that the notion of the resurrection from the dead begins to emerge in the Book of Daniel.

Si estas viviendo una vida buena y santa, la lectura será una consolación. Pero si no estas siguiendo las enseñanzas del Señor, las lecturas te causaran horror y desgracia. También hay que notar que en el Libro de Daniel comienzan a salir ideas de la resurrección de los muertos.

It says that St. Michael the Archangel will come at the end of time to guide the people of God. There will be great distress, but good people have nothing to fear. “They shall live forever.” Daniel emphasizes the positive: “The wise shall shine brightly like the splendor of the firmament, and those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever” (Daniel 12:3).

Daniel dice que San Miguel Arcángel vendrá en los fines de los tiempos a guiar a la gente de Dios. The Alleluia verse gives us the bottom line: “Be vigilant at all times, and pray that you have the strength to stand before the Son of Man” (Luke 21:36). Jesus chose to use the title “Son of Man” to refer to himself. It comes from Daniel 7:13-14. “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like the Son of Man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.

El verso del Aleluya nos da el tema del día: “Sed vigilantes todo el tiempo, y rezad que tengas la fuerza para estar de pie antes del Hijo del Hombre” (Lucas 21:36). Jesús escogió usar él titulo: “Hijo del Hombre” para hablar de sí mismo. And to him was given dominion and glory and kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.”

Y le fue dado dominio, gloria y reino, para que todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas le sirvieran; su dominio es dominio eterno, que nunca pasara, y su reino uno que no será destruido.”

Note that this passage is very similar to what Jesus said in Mark 13:26-27. “They will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.” In Mark 13:31 Jesus says: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

Noten que este pasaje es muy parecido a lo que Jesús dijo en Marcos 13:26-27. “Ellos verán al Hijo del Hombre viniendo en las nubes con gran poder y gloria, y entonces mandara los ángeles y recogerán a los elegidos de los cuatro vientos, desde los fines de la tierra hasta los fines de los cielos.” En Marcos 13:31 Jesús dice: “El cielo y la tierra pasaran, pero mis palabras no pasaran.”

Jesus also said, “This generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.” The tension comes a couple of lines later when he says: “But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” So once again, we have to interpret this.

Jesús también dijo: Esta generación no pasara hasta que todos estas cosas sucedan.” La tensión viene unas dos líneas después cuando Él dice: “Pero de ese día o hora, nadie sabe, ni los ángeles del cielo, ni el Hijo, pero solo el Padre.” De manera que una vez mas tenemos que interpretar esto.

Jesus prophesied. As far as history is concerned, Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans in the year 67. Within forty years, there was an earthquake in Laodicaea, and the volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompei in lava. Famine came to Rome in the days of Claudius. Those were times of terror for anyone who was there.

Jesús profetizo. La historia nos dice que Jerusalén fue derrotada por los Romanos en el año 67. Dentro de cuarenta años hubo un terremoto en Laodicaea, y el volcán Monte Visuvio tuvo una erupción y enterró a Pompea con lava. Hubo hambre en Roma en el tiempo de Claudio. Estos fueron tiempos de terror para todos los que estaban allí.

What we should notice is that Jesus did foretell that he would come again. Time passes, eternity advances. The end is wrapped up in mystery. It seems to me that the important thing is to live each day as if it were the last day of your life. If you do this, you will not be afraid of the last days.

A mí me parece que lo importante es vivir cada día como si fuera el ultimo día de mi vida. Si haces esto, no tendrás miedo de los últimos días.

Trust in the Lord. Live in a way that is pleasing to God, to the best of your ability. If you love the Lord now, you have received a special grace. Pray for perseverance in that grace until the end of time. One of the best ways to do this is to pray the rosary daily. The last words of the Hail Mary are: “Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

Confía en el Señor. Vive de tal manera que se complazca Dios Confía en el Señor. Vive de tal manera que se complazca Dios. Haz lo mejor que puedas. Si amas a Dios ahora, haz recibido una gracia especial. Reza por la perseverancia en esa gracia hasta los fines de los tiempos. Uno de los mejores modos de hacer esto es rezando el rosario diario. Las ultimas palabras del “Ave Maria” son “Ruega por nosotros pecadores, ahora, y en la hora de nuestra muerte. Amen.”

There is no reason to be afraid, if Jesus and Our Lady are going to be there. “He is the same, yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). If he loves us today, and we are happy to be with him, he will love us at the end of time, and we will be happy to be with him then. When St. Ignatius Loyola was close to his death, he wept with consolation. He was so happy that he would soon be with Jesus whom he had loved and served. Those are beautiful sentiments for all of us to have when we think of the end of time.

No hay razón para tener miedo si Jesús y Nuestra Señora van a estar allí. “Él es el mismo ayer, ahora, y para siempre” (Hebreos 13:8). Si nos ama hoy, y estamos contentos con Él, nos amara a los fines de los tiempos, y estaremos contentos con Él entonces. Cuando San Ignacio de Loyola estaba cerca de su muerte, lloraba con consolación. Estaba tan feliz que pronto estaría con Jesús a quien había servido y amado. Estos bellos sentimientos son buenos para todos nosotros al pensar de los fines de los tiempos.

St. Paul reminds us: “If God is for us, who can be against us St. Paul reminds us: “If God is for us, who can be against us? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No. In all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:31, 35, 37-39).

San Pablo nos recuerda: “Si Dios esta con nosotros, ¿quien pueda estar contra nosotros? ¿Quién nos separara del amor de Cristo? ¿Tribulación, o angustia, o persecución, o hambre, o desnudez, o peligro, o espada? En todas estas cosas somos mas que vencedores por medio de aquel que nos ama. Por lo cual estoy seguro de que ni la muerte, ni la vida, ni ángeles, ni principados, ni potestades, ni lo presente, ni lo por venir, ni lo alto, ni lo profundo, ni ninguna otra cosa creada nos podrá separar del amor de Dios, que es en Cristo Jesús Señor nuestro” (Romanos 8:31, 35, 37-39).

So why should I be afraid. Rather, I will join St So why should I be afraid? Rather, I will join St. John and the People of God who, at the end of the Bible, in Revelations 22:20, said: “Come, Lord Jesus!” Come now, and come at the end of time! ¿Entonces, por qué he de tener miedo? Al contrario, me unire a San Juan y al Pueblo de Dios que al fin de la Biblia, en Revelaciones 22:20 dice: “¡Ven Señor Jesús! ¡Ven ahora, y ven a los fines de los tiempos!
