4 y al ir arrojando la semilla, unos granos cayeron a lo largo del camino; vinieron los pájaros y se los comieron. 5 Otros granos cayeron en terreno pedregoso, que tenía poca tierra; ahí germinaron pronto, porque la tierra no era gruesa; 6 pero cuando subió el sol, los brotes se marchitaron y, como no tenían raíces, se secaron. 7 Otros cayeron entre espinos, y cuando los espinos crecieron, sofocaron las plantitas.

8 Otros granos cayeron en tierra buena y dieron fruto: unos, ciento por uno; otros, sesenta; y otros, treinta. 9 El que tenga oídos que oiga”. 10 Después se le acercaron sus discípulos y le preguntaron: “¿Por qué les hablas en parábolas?” 11 Él les respondió: “A ustedes se les ha concedido conocer los misterios del Reino de los cielos, pero a ellos no. 12 Al que tiene se le dará más y nadará en la abundancia; pero al que tiene poco, aun eso poco se le quitará.

13 Por eso les hablo en parábolas, porque viendo no ven y oyendo no oyen ni entienden. 14 En ellos se cumple aquella profecía de Isaías, que dice: ‘Oirán una y otra vez y no entenderán; mirarán y volverán a mirar, pero no verán; 15 porque este pueblo ha endurecido su corazón, ha cerrado sus ojos, y tapado sus oídos, con el fin de no ver con los ojos ni oír con los oídos, ni comprender con el corazón. Porque no quieren convertirse ni que yo los salve.’

16 “Pero dichosos ustedes, porque sus ojos ven y sus oídos oyen. 17 Yo les aseguro que muchos profetas y muchos justos desearon ver lo que ustedes ven y no lo vieron, y oír lo que ustedes oyen y no lo oyeron. 18 Escuchen, pues, ustedes, lo que significa la parábola del sembrador. 19 A todo hombre que oye la palabra del Reino y no la entiende, le llega el diablo y le arrebata lo sembrado en su corazón. Esto es lo que significan los granos que cayeron a lo largo del camino.

20 Lo sembrado sobre terreno pedregoso significa al que oye la palabra y la acepta inmediatamente con alegría; 21 pero, como es inconstante, no la deja echar raíces, y apenas le viene una tribulación o una persecución por causa de la palabra, sucumbe. 22 Lo sembrado entre los espinos representa a aquel que oye la palabra, pero las preocupaciones de la vida y la seducción de las riquezas la sofocan y queda sin fruto.

23 En cambio, lo sembrado en tierra buena representa a quienes oyen la palabra, la entienden y dan fruto: unos el ciento por uno; otros, el sesenta, y otros, el treinta”. Palabra del Señor

8 But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. 9 Whoever has ears ought to hear.” 10 The disciples approached him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables? ” 11 He said to them in reply, “Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted.

12 To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because ‘they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.’ 14 Isaiah's prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: ‘You shall indeed hear but not understand you shall indeed look but never see.

15 Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and be converted, and I heal them.’ 16 “But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears , because they hear. 17 Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

18 “Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. 20 The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. 21 But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away.

22 The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. 23 But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.” Gospel of the Lord

The prophet speaks about God’s word that is eternal. He says it goes forth from his mouth and does not return to him empty. It always accomplishes the end for which he sent it. It speaks about God the Father, who has been sowing his word from all eternity. He makes it fertile and fruitful.

Galatians 4:4 says: that in the fullness of time, God sent forth his Son, (the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity), also called the Word, in John 1:1. And the Word was made flesh, in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and that was Jesus. So when Jesus speaks, he speaks about eternal mysteries. He came from God to teach us, in language we could understand.

Gálatas 4:4 dice que en la plenitud de los tiempos, Dios mando a su Hijo, (la Segunda Persona de la Santísima Trinidad), también llamado la Palabra, en Juan 1:1. He spoke about the Sower, who is his heavenly Father He spoke about the Sower, who is his heavenly Father. He spoke in parables, because those who were not worthy don’t get it. “They look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand” (Matthew 13:13). This happened because their hearts were not ready. They were not doing God’s will. They were hypocritical and plotted to kill Jesus the King of the Jews from day one, in the days of King Herod. Eventually they killed him, as King of the Jews.

But Jesus rose from the dead and continues in his risen Body to teach us. That is the power of the risen Christ. It is still in parables, and it is still being accepted by some and rejected by others. You and I have a choice to make every day. Are we going to accept Him, or are we going to reject Him? Some call it the “fundamental option.” It is something very deep in our hearts that has enormous implications. If we accept Jesus and live by his teachings we will be saved. If we reject Him we will be condemned.

Pero Jesús se levanto de la muerte y sigue enseñándonos en su Cuerpo resucitado. Eso es el poder de Cristo resucitado. Sigue enseñando en parábolas, y sigue siendo aceptado por unos, y rechazado por otros. Tu y yo tenemos una decisión que hacer a lo diario. Aceptar a Cristo, o rechazarlo. Esto se dice que es una decisión tan fundamental, que esta muy a profundas en nuestros corazones, y tiene enormes implicaciones. Si aceptamos a Jesucristo y si vivimos por sus enseñanzas nos salvaremos. Si lo rechazamos seremos condenados.

If you accept him, rejoice If you accept him, rejoice! Jesus said: “Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it” (Matthew 13:17). How good it is, to be chosen!

Scholars believe it was the early Christians that first understood it, and shared what they learned with us. There are those who hear the word of the kingdom, but do not understand it. The evil one comes and sees it, and steals away what was sown in their hearts. That is why St. Ignatius Loyola notes that it is so important to ask for knowledge of the deceits of the devil and for help to guard myself against them (Spiritual Exercises #139). Don’t be deceived!

Next, there are those who hear the word of God, (the seed falling on rocky soil). They receive it at once with joy, but they have no root and last only for a short time. As soon as tribulation or persecution because of the word comes, they fall away (Matthew 13:22). This indicates that we need to prepare so as to be strong in persecution or tribulation.

How do we do that? A steady diet of prayer and reflection on the word of God is very much needed. Retreats are excellent means of deepening your commitment to God. Even though they may be expensive and time-consuming, they are certainly worth it.

Y ¿Cómo se hace eso? Es muy necesario tener una buena dieta de oración y reflexión sobre la palabra de Dios. Un retiro puede ser un modo excelente para profundizar su entrega a Dios. Vale la pena, aunque quizás tome tiempo y cueste mucho.

The next set of people is about those who hear the word, but the thorns choke the word and it bears no fruit. Worldly anxiety and the lure of riches are the thorns. In the Gospel of John, the “world” is an image of those who resist God’s plan for holiness. They are anxious because they are greedy, and crave to satisfy their passions, no matter what.

The bad news is that we have a contemporary social problem with porno, strip joints, and excesses in the area of lust. Sometimes it leads to abortion or to family break-up and sexually transmitted diseases like Aids. There is also widespread misuse of drugs. In Juarez, Mexico where I work, drug wars between rival drug cartels have led to daily assassinations.

La mala noticia es que tenemos un gran problema contemporáneo con el porno, y los que frecuentan salas de entretenimiento sexual. A veces esto llega al aborto, o causa problemas entre familias, y causan la transmisión de enfermedades sexuales como el Sida. También hay el abuso de drogas. En Ciudad Juárez donde trabajo, hay guerras entre los carteles de drogas tal que hay asesinatos diarios.

The good news is that in the City of El Paso we helped pass a law that restricts sexually oriented businesses as much as the law allows.

La buena noticia es que en la Ciudad del El Paso ayudamos a pasar una ley que pone restricciones sobre negocios con orientación sexual, tanto cuanto la ley permite.

Money can be a blessing, but if it becomes the be-all and the end-all of life, at the expense of social justice, not managed properly, it can be an obstacle for the progress in the spiritual life.

El dinero puede ser una bendición, pero si una persona lo busca como si fuera todo, olvidando a los demás, sin ninguna consideración a la justicia social, puede ser un obstáculo para progreso en la vida espiritual.

We all like to plant on rich soil We all like to plant on rich soil. As we see the fruit of our labors it is a great consolation. How happy are those who have found God and Jesus in their hearts and live the Gospel, and yield a hundred, or sixty, or thirty-fold! Glory to God!
