Transcripción de la presentación:

Por vs. Para for, by, through, along, in, on behalf of, in order to…

When to use Para Para expresses a purpose or goal Para often translates as “in order to” (or a shortened: “to”) Llegué ayer para visitar a mi amigo. I arrived yesterday (in order) to visit a friend. Trabajé para comprar un I-Pod. I work in order to buy an I-Pod. Miguel estudia para médico. Miguel studies (in order) to be a doctor. When referring to a profession, you may drop the verb after para.

When to use Para Para expresses the special use of an object. In this case, para could be translated as “for”. Necesito un cepillo para el pelo. Es una caja para dulces. I need a hairbrush. I need a brush for hair. It is a box for candies. Compare! Es una caja de dulces. - It is a candy box.

More para… Para expresses the destination or direction Ejemplos: Ayer, ellos salieron para México. Yesterday, they left for Mexico. Esta carta es para ti. This letter is for you.

Write the following sentences: I always prepared myself to do well. They gave him the toothbrush. My friend, Cuco, studies to be a lawyer. Yo siempre me preparaba para hacer bien. Ellos le dieron el cepillo para los dientes. Mi amigo, Cuco, estudia para abogado.

Más ejemplos The money is for your parents. Who has the guide (guía) for the T.V.? El dinero es para tus padres. ¿Quién tiene el guía para la tele?

When to use Por Por expresses the following English words: –by-”times” (math function) –through –along Ejemplos: -Miguel pasó por aquí a las 5:00.Miguel came by here at 5:00 -Entraron por el jardín.They entered through the garden. -Yo caminaba por la orilla. I walked along the shore. -2 X 2 = 4 dos por dos son cuatro

When Por means “for”… the trouble starts… Por expresses “in exchange for” Yo te doy $10 por el videojuego. I’ll give you $10 for the videogame. Por expresses the duration of an action. Fue a Europa por 2 meses. He went to Europe for 2 months. Por means “on behalf of” María-Elena habló por la clase. María-Elena spoke on behalf the class. Alternatative: María-Elena spoke for the class.

Ideas Básicas… If you wish to say: by, through, along, or around…use “por” When expressing “for”, learn the differences: Para Purpose or goal Special use Destination/direction Por In exchange for Duration On behalf of

So the idea is… If you want to say by, through, along, use: POR

If you want to say FOR, use PARA Unless…

The word FOR is used in one of these three ways: a.In exchange for b.On behalf of c.A duration of time Then you must use POR.
