comparisons in Spanish. There are many different ways to make comparisons in Spanish. The following slides will explain different ways. Examples will be given.

More than The “er” on an adjective Más + noun + que Adjective adverb Hay más tomates que pimientos. There are more tomatos than peppers. El chico es mas grande que la chica The boy is bigger than the girl. Ella habla mas rapidamente que yo. She speaks faster than me.

Practicamos! She has more peppers than him. Ella tiene mas pimientos que el. There are more boys than girls in the room. Hay mas chicos que chicas en la sala. We have more books than pencils. Tenemos mas libros que lapices.

Less than fewer Hay menos tomates que pimientos. Menos + noun + que Adjective adverb Hay menos tomates que pimientos. There are fewer (less) tomatos than peppers. El chico es menos grande que la chica The boy is “less big” than the girl. Ella habla menos rapidamente que yo. She speaks less quickly than me.

Practicamos The paella has less garlic than onions. La paella tiene menos ajo que cebollas You bought less tomatoes than peppers. Tu compraste menos tomates que pimientos. I have less lettuce than peas. Tengo menos lechuga que guisantes.

As much as As many as Tanto + noun + como Tanta Tantos Tantas Hay tanto pescado como verduras en la paella. Yo tengo tanta lechuga como tomates en mi ensalada. Hay tantos guisantes como pimientos en el mercado. Ella tiene tantas latas de guisantes como cebollas .

Practicamos Make up your own. There is as many tomatos as peppers in the salad. Hay tantos tomates como pimientos en la ensalada. We have as much garlic as onions in the paella. Tenemos tanto ajo como cebollas en la paella. Make up your own.

As _____As Tan + adjective + como adverb Sus tomates son tan maduros como mis tomates. His tomatoes are as ripe as my tomatoes. Ella corre tan rapidamente como mi amigo. She runs as fast as my friend.

Practicamos I am as nice as she is. Yo soy tan simpatico como ella. My tomato is as ripe as your tomato. Mi tomate es tan maduro como tu tomate. Make up your own.

As much as (verbs) verb + tanto como Mi madre cocina tanto como mi padre. My mother cooks as much as my father. Nuestros amigos estudiaron tanto como sus amigos. Our friends studied as much as your friends.

Practicamos I clean as much as my mother. Yo limpio tanto como mi madre. She watches as much TV as he does. Ella mira la television tanto como el. Make up your own.

More than Less than verb + mas que menos que Yo estudio mas que ella. I study more than her. Tu hablaste menos que yo. You spoke less than me.

Practicamos We eat more than them. Nosotros comemos mas que ellos. Yesterday, they bought less than us. Ayer, ellos compraron menos que nosotros. Make up your own.

The Superlative! (the best, the most, the least…) To form the superlative, use this formula… Definite article + noun + mas + adjective OR Definite artilce + noun + menos + adjective Yo soy el profesor mas inteligente! El ajo es el ingrediente mas importante.

Practicamos He is the tallest boy in the class. El es el chico mas alto en la clase. That dog is the stupidest dog that we have Ese perro es el perro mas estupido que nosotros tenemos. Make up your own.

Yet one more formula for the superlative… Verb + lo + mas + adverb + posible Ella tiene que barrer lo mas pronto posible.

Irregular Comparatives Good……………..better……………..best Bueno……………mejor…………….el mejor Ella es buena. Su hermano es mejor. Sus primos son los mejores.

Practicamos I am good; she is better, but they are the best. Yo soy bueno; ella es mejor, pero ellos son los mejores. Make up your own.

More Irregular Comparatives Bad……………..worse……………..worst malo……………peor…………….el peor Juan es malo. Juana es peor. Juanita es la peor.

Practicamos We are bad; they are worse, but I am the worst. Nosotros somos malos; ellos son peores, pero yo soy el peor. Make up your own.

And yet two more comparative Older …………………….mayor Mi perro es mayor que tu perro. My dog is older than your dog. Younger………………….. Menor Ella es menor que mi hermano. She is younger than my brother.

Practicamos Maria’s mother is the oldest. My brother is the youngest. La madre de Maria es la mayor. My brother is the youngest. Mi hermano es el menor.
