Los reflexivos, parte II

Where we left off… By now, you should be comfortable conjugating both regular verbs and reflexive verbs. By now, you should be comfortable conjugating both regular verbs and reflexive verbs. Remember, the only difference between regular and reflexive verbs are the pronouns that must accompany a reflexive verb. Remember, the only difference between regular and reflexive verbs are the pronouns that must accompany a reflexive verb.

Review Lavar is a regular verb. Lavarse is a reflexive verb. Lavar – to wash Lavar – to wash –Yo lavo –Tú lavas –Usted lava –Él lava –Ella lava –Nosotros lavamos –Ellos lavan –Ellas lavan –Ustedes lavan Lavarse – to wash oneself Lavarse – to wash oneself –Yo me lavo –Tú te lavas –Usted se lava –Él se lava –Ella se lava –Nosotros nos lavamos –Ellos se lavan –Ellas se lavan –Ustedes se lavan

New Information: second verb stays as an infinitive, change the pronoun of the reflexive verb to match the subject If you have two verbs in your sentence the second verb stays as an infinitive, but you must change the pronoun of the reflexive verb to match the subject of the sentence. – –Necesito lavarme las manos. Verb 1 = necesito (conjugated to the yo form) Verb 2 = lavar (infinitive form because its the 2 nd verb) Pronoun = me (changed to the yo form of the pronoun) Lavar stays as an infinitive, because necesito is already conjugated. The se must change to me because yo is the subject of the sentence.

Ejemplos Necesito lavarme las manos. Necesito lavarme las manos. –Necesito is in the yo form, therefore we must use me as our reflexive pronoun. Necesitamos lavarnos las manos. Necesitamos lavarnos las manos. –Necesitamos is in the nosotros form, therefore we must use nos as our reflexive pronoun. Ella necesita lavarse las manos. Ella necesita lavarse las manos. –Necesita is in the ella form, therefore we ust use se as our reflexive pronoun.

Where can I put reflexive pronouns? Before a conjugated verb Before a conjugated verb After an infinitive After an infinitive * Just like direct object pronouns

Ejemplos He is going to comb his hair. He is going to comb his hair. Él va a peinarse el pelo. Él va a peinarse el pelo.OR Él se va a peinar el pelo. Él se va a peinar el pelo. Reflexive pronoun after an infinitive Reflexive pronoun before a conjugated verb

Ejemplos We have to wash our faces. We have to wash our faces. Tenemos que lavarnos las caras. Tenemos que lavarnos las caras.OR Nos tenemos que lavar las caras. Nos tenemos que lavar las caras. Reflexive pronoun after an infinitive Reflexive pronoun before a conjugated verb

You must use infinitives after the following phrases. para para –in order to después de después de –after antes de antes de –before Usa el reloj para despertarse. –i–i–i–in order to wake up. Ella se baña después de despertarse. –a–a–a–after she wakes up. Ella se despierta antes de bañarse. –b–b–b–before she bathes.

Más ejemplos… 1. I have to put on make-up. Tengo que maquillarme. 2. She wants to comb her hair. Quiere peinarse. 3. We have to brush our teeth. Tenemos que lavarnos los dientes.

Remember: Changing just the reflexive pronoun does not mean you have conjugated the verb. Changing just the reflexive pronoun does not mean you have conjugated the verb. –Lavarme las manos.Me lavo las manos. You only attach the reflexive pronoun to the end of a reflexive verb if the reflexive verb is the 2 nd verb of the sentence. You only attach the reflexive pronoun to the end of a reflexive verb if the reflexive verb is the 2 nd verb of the sentence. –Tengo que lavarme las manos. badgood
