Cláusulas condicionales con si

En español y en inglés las oraciones condicionales tienen dos cláusulas, una cláusula condicional con si (if clause) y una cláusula principal (main clause) La cláusula condicional con si puede estar al comienzo o al final de la oración Si no tengo tarea, iré al centro comercial. Iré al centro comercial si no tengo tarea. Si no tuviera tarea, iría al centro comercial. Iría al centro comercial si no tuviera tarea.

Condiciones reales Cuando la cláusula con si se refiere a una condición que es habitual, posible o muy probable, ésta es una condición real y la cláusula con si debe estar en el presente de indicativo. Recuerda que la cláusula principal siempre debe estar en el indicativo (presente o futuro). Si tenemos una prueba, la profe (siempre) nos da ejercicios para practicar. (If we have a quiz [every time we have a quiz], the teacher (always) gives us exercises to practice.) Si vas a la fiesta, yo iré contigo. (If you go to the party [it is likely that you will go], I will go with you.)

Condiciones contrarias a la realidad actual –presente- ( Condiciones contrarias a la realidad actual –presente- (*currently contrary) Cuando la cláusula con si se refiere a una situación contraria a la realidad en el presente (currently contrary) la cláusula con si necesita el imperfecto del subjuntivo. Como ésta es una condición totalmente hipotética , la cláusula principal debe usar el condicional *There are two kinds of currently contrary sentences: A. The situation described is not currently true. But if the situation changed- there is a possibility that will change - , the result clause would be able to occur B. The situation described is not currently true. But if the situation changed- it is unlikely to change - , the result clause would be able to occur

Condiciones contrarias a la realidad actual (presente) Si yo fuera presidente prohibiría la quema de árboles If I were president I would ban the burning of trees [ I am not the president now, but there is a possibility that I might get elected in the future ] B. Si tú fueras a la fiesta, yo iría también. If you were going to the party, I would go too. [but the reality is that you are not going, so I won’t go either] Yo te diría la verdad si la supiera. I would tell you the truth, if I knew it. [but the reality is that I don’t know the truth, so I cannot tell you what it is]

¡OJO! NUNCA se usa el PRESENTE del subjuntivo en las cláusulas con si. La cláusula con si puede estar en el imperfecto del subjuntivo o en el presente de indicativo. La cláusula principal puede estar en el presente de indicativo, futuro de indicativo o condicional de indicativo.

Pistas (HINTS) En inglés: the use of the past tense in the “if” clause to indicate a present/future situation. “If you spoke [right now]...” En español: usa el imperfecto del subjuntivo en la cláusula con si. “Si tú hablaras (ahora)…” En inglés: the use of the word “would” in the main clause to indicate conjecture for present/future time. “...they would believe you [now or in the future]”. En español: usa el condicional en la cláusula principal. “…Ellos te creerían (ahora o en el futuro).”
