To talk about past events

There are two forms used to express events in the past, which are the same in English. Let’s look at how each is used.

Lukas comió pizza anoche. The form that tells you about an action that started and ended at a definite time. Viajé a El Salvador el verano pasado. I traveled to El Salvador last summer. Viví en Egipto dos años. I lived in Egypt two years. Lukas comió pizza anoche. Lukas ate pizza last night.

Mi padre trabajaba en el banco todos los días. The form that tells about past actions without saying when they begin or end. Todo el mundo dormía. Everybody was sleeping. La chica cantaba. The girl was singing. Mi padre trabajaba en el banco todos los días. My father worked in the bank everyday. Other uses: The sentences don’t tell you when the action started and ended. Also, with age, time, weather, and background events of a story. “Was+ing and Were+ing”

To express actions with no specific beginning or end -ar -aba -abas -ábamos -aban -er -ía -ías -íamos -ían -ir Same as -er
