Completed actions in the past (things that are already over!) To focus on the beginning or ending of a past action.

3 Common words that trigger the preterit (HINTS!) 

4 There are 2 sets of endings for regular verbs
-er and –ir verbs

5 -ar verb endings -ar verbs yo nosotros (as) tú vosotros (as) él ellos

6 Hablar- to talk hablé hablaste habló hablamos hablaron

7 Bailar- to dance bailé bailaste bailó bailamos bailaron

9 Examples -ar verbs Ayer yo hablé con mi abuela. (hablar)
El domingo pasado tú pasaste el día con tu familia. (pasar ) ¡La semana pasada nosotros estudiamos cada día! (estudiar)

¿Comiste una hamburguesa durante el almuerzo? (comer) Ellos salieron a las siete de la noche. (salir) Ella escribió una carta a su amigo por correspondencia. (escribir)

15 Spelling changes in the preterit
Some verbs require a spelling change in the preterit. This is to maintain a consistent pronunciation of a verb! (So that it sounds right!) 

16 Spelling Change Rule # 1 An unaccented i between 2 vowels changes to y. EJ: Papá lo leyó ayer. (Dad read it yesterday.) No oyeron las noticias. (They didn’t hear the news.) This rule only affects the usted/él/ella and the ustedes/ellos/ellas forms of the preterit.

17 Spelling Change Rule # 2 The letter c changes to qu before e or i. EJ:
Yo practiqué la guitarra anteayer. (I practiced the guitar the day before yesterday.) This rule only affects the yo form of verbs ending in –car: practicar, calificar, explicar, etc.

18 Spelling Change Rule # 3 The letter g changes to gu before e and i.
EJ: Llegué tarde a la escuela el martes. (I arrived late to school on Tuesday.) This rule only affects the yo form of verbs ending in –gar: llegar, pagar,jugar, obligar, etc.

19 Spelling Change Rule # 4 The letter z changes to c before e or i. EJ:
Ya empecé mi tarea. (I already started my homework.) This rule only affects the yo form of verbs ending in –zar: comenzar, empezar, etc.
