Let’s review! Here is how we use gusta to talk about activities that we like or dislike: Me gusta estudiar español. Te gusta estudiar español. Le gusta estudiar español. Nos gusta estudiar español. Les gusta estudiar español.

I like coffee. In addition to liking activities – swimming, going to movies, rollerblading – we also like things – coffee, milk, Spanish class (well, sometimes!), dogs, cats, and so on. When we talk about liking things in Spanish, we still use gusta, but with a twist.

You’re the detective. Let’s play Sherlock Holmes for a moment. Here are some Spanish sentences that illustrate how gusta is used a little bit differently when we talk about things. Me gusta el café. Me gusta el té caliente. Me gustan los huevos fritos. Me gustan las papas fritas. No me gusta el pescado. No me gustan los refrescos.

Elementary, my dear Watson! Group them together by the form of gusta: Me gusta el café. Me gusta el té caliente. No me gusta el pescado. and Me gustan los huevos fritos. Me gustan las papas fritas. No me gustan los refrescos. Look at the subjects (remember, in Spanish, that would be the things we like or dislike).

So that’s how we do it! Gusta has two forms: We use gusta when we talk about liking (or disliking) one thing. Me gusta el té caliente. No me gusta el pescado. We use gustan when we talk about liking (or disliking) more than one thing. Me gustan las papas fritas. No me gustan los refrescos.

¿Te gusta? A mi hermana le gusta leer novelas. The subject is leer, not novelas…use gusta any time it is followed by an infinitive (-r form of the verb).
