LOS ADJETIVOS THE ADJECTIVES

1. What is an Adjective? Words that describe people or things: ex: Maria is studios. John is quite lazy.

2. What forms do adj. in Spanish have? Spanish adjectives have 2 forms: masculine ending in -o : el profesor serio feminine ending in -a: la profesora seria

3. What do “masculine adjectives” describe? They are used to describe masculine nouns: el estudiante estudioso

4. What do feminine adjectives describe? They describe feminine nouns: la estudiante estudiosa

5. Adjectives ending in -e Describe both masculine and feminine nouns : el estudiante inteligente la estudiante inteligente Sociable paciente

6. Adjectives whose masculine form end in -dor Have the feminine form that ends in -dora Trabajador  trabajadora Hablador  habladora

7. Adjectives ending in -ista Have the same form for masculine and feminine: El estudiante deportista La estudiante deportista

8. !!! Order in a sentence!!! In English we have adjective+noun the studious student In Spanish we have noun + adjective el estudiante estudioso

9. Agreement The noun has to agree with the adjective in number and gender

If the noun is masculine The adjective should take the masculine form – where applies the rule – see slide number 2 El chico serio

If the noun is feminine The adjective should take the feminine form La chica seria

Exceptions There are some adjectives that have the same form for masculine and feminine El chico inteligente La chica inteligente El chico paciente La chica paciente

Plural – Adjectives have to agree in plural also El chico serio  los chicos serios La chica seria  las chicas serias
