3 ¡ATENCIÓN! The numbers sixteen through nineteen can also be written as three words: diez y seis, diez y siete… The forms uno and veintiuno are used when counting (uno, dos, tres…veinte, veintiuno, veintidós…). They are also used when the number follows a noun, even if the noun is feminine: la lección uno.

4 Using numbers to answer “How many?”
When someone asks the question “How many?” it calls for the use of numbers. When numbers are used as adjectives, they come before the noun.

5 Numbers from 0-30 do not change to agree with the noun, except for those ending in the number “one.” The word “uno” is not used as an adjective. If the noun being counted is masculine, uno becomes un. If the noun being counted is feminine, uno becomes una.

To ask the quantity ¿Cuánto?/ ¿ Cuánta? = How much? ¿ Cuántos?/ ¿ Cuántas? = How many? The interrogative word to inquire about the quantity of people and things works as an adjective. It must agree with the noun being modified in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural).

9 To ask how many people or things there are, use cuántos before masculine nouns and cuántas before feminine nouns. ¿cuántos libros? ¿cuántas palabras?

10 Hay veintidós chicas en la clase.
The Spanish equivalent of both there is and there are is hay. Hay un chico en la clase. Hay veintidós chicas en la clase. Use ¿Hay…? to ask Is there…? or Are there…? ¿Cuántos libros hay? ¿Cuántas fotos hay? Use no hay to express there is not or there are not. No hay diccionario. No hay computadoras.

11 ¡OJO! In questions and in negative statements with “hay” we don’t use un/una before the noun unless we mean the number “one.” ¿Hay una computadora en la clase? Is there one computer in the class? Sí, hay una computadora. Yes, there is one computer. No, hay dos computadoras. No, there are two computers. ¿ Hay computadora en la clase? Is there a computer in the class? Sí, hay computadora en la clase. No, no hay computadora en la clase.
