Ser vs. Estar - Special cases Ser is used to describe inherent traits while estar is used with adjectives to describe conditions. Using Ser or Estar will give a different shade of meaning.

SER The speaker considers the characteristic inherent or expected. ESTAR The speaker expresses a subjective opinion. This is often expressed in English with to look, to seem, to feel, or to taste.

SER El seguro es caro. Insurance (usually) is expensive. ESTAR El seguro de esta compañía está caro. That companys insurance is surprisingly expensive.

SER Tu hijo es alto. Your son is tall. ESTAR ¡Qué alto está tu hijo! Your son looks so tall! (Hes grown )

SER El café es bueno. Coffee is good (all the time). ESTAR El café está bueno. The coffee (right now) is good!

SER o ESTAR – meaning change! Some adjectives have a different meaning depending on whether they use ser or estar.

SER Aburrido: boring La reunion fue aburrido. The meeting was boring. ESTAR Aburrido: bored Hugo estuvo aburrido todo el dia. Hugo was bored all day.

SER Listo: smart Elisa es lista. Elisa is smart ESTAR Listo: ready Elisa está lista para la fiesta. Elisa is ready for the party.

SER Malo: mean Mi jefe es malo. My boss is mean. ESTAR Malo: ill Mi jefe está malo. My boss is sick.

SER Rico/a: rich Nuestra becaria no es rica. Our intern isnt rich. ESTAR Rico: delicious La comida aquí está rica. The food is delicious!

Practice – use the present tense of ser or estar.
