EL IMPERFECTO

“El imperfecto” is used to refer to actions that took place in the past either repeatedly or over an extended period of time. Although we know the action is taking place in the past, how long the action took place is NOT specific.

EXAMPLES: I used to live in Wilmington. Mary was a good athlete. 1. 2. 3. I used to live in Wilmington. Ashley always ate ice cream for breakfast. Mary was a good athlete. ***In all three of these sentences the element of time is NOT specific. The imperfect tense tells us when something happened in GENERAL, NOT specific.***

Regular –AR verb endings yo -aba nosotros -ábamos tú -abas vosotros -abais él ella -aba Ud. ellos ellas -aban Uds.

Regular –ER/-IR verb endings yo -ía nosotros -íamos tú -ías vosotros -íais él ella -ía Ud. ellos ellas -ían Uds. ***There is an accent on the first “I” in every form***

SER = TO BE IR = TO GO VER = TO SEE/WATCH Nearly all verbs in the imperfect are regular. Only THREE verbs are irregular. 1. 2. 3. SER = TO BE IR = TO GO VER = TO SEE/WATCH

SER = TO BE yo era nosotros éramos tú eras vosotros erais él ella era Ud. ellos ellas eran Uds.

IR = TO GO yo iba nosotros íbamos tú ibas vosotros ibais él ella iba Ud. ellos ellas iban Uds.

VER = TO SEE / TO WATCH yo veía nosotros veíamos tú veías vosotros veíais él ella veía Ud. ellos ellas veían Uds.

Words that indicate IMPERFECT: muchas veces many times (casi) siempre (almost) always todos los años every year cada día every day generalmente generally nunca never todos los días everyday a menudo often por lo general de vez en cuando from time to time
