Ok, first lets review what the verb SER looks like. Remember, all its forms are totally irregular and they follow NO pattern. You must memorize them!

SER Yosoy Túeres Ud. Éles Ella Nosotros somos Vosotros sois Uds. Ellos son Ellas

So when do we use SER? Used to tell TIME and DATE. Son las dos y media. It is two thirty. Es el veinte de noviembre. It is the twentieth of November.

So when do we use SER? Used to tell NATIONALITY. For example: Yo soy americana. Él es puertorriqueño.

So when do use SER? Used to tell WHERE SOMEONE OR SOMETHING IS FROM. ¿De dónde eres? Soy de NC. Tú eres de Nicaragua. Ellas son de Costa Rica.

So when do we use SER? Used with adjectives to describe CHARACTERISTICS. Yo soy artistica. Rebeca es alta. Las chicas son guapas. Enrique y yo somos guapos.

SER VS. ESTAR As mentioned before, there is another verb in Spanish that means to be. It is the verb ESTAR.

SER VS. ESTAR ESTAR is an irregular verb, just like SER, so you must memorize all its forms.

So when do we use ESTAR? Used for telling LOCATION. For example:

Estar is used to express location Estás debajo de la bandera. You are underneath the flag. El libro está en la mesa. The book is on the table. Yo estoy en Guatemala. I am in Guatemala.

ESTAR is also Used to tell FEELINGS & CONDITION. For example:

ESTAR (feelings/conditions) Eduardo está ocupado. Eduardo is busy. Ana y Luisa están tristes. Ana and Luisa are sad.

SER VS. ESTAR There are certain occasions in which you will use either SER or ESTAR. For how you feel and where you are always use the verb ESTAR, for everything else SER.
