III. Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns

Los complementos directos o Direct Object Pronouns (D.O.P.’s) They tell who or what ________ the action of the verb. Example: Do you wash the dishes? Yes, I wash them. So, instead of repeating…the dishes…we use the word them.

What are the direct object pronouns? Singular Plural (me) (us) (you) (you guys) Masculine (it/him/you) (them/you all) Feminine (it/her/you)

Los complementos indirectos o IOP’s They answer the questions “________?” or “_________?” the action is performed/intended. Example: Ana bought gifts for her friends. She bought gifts for them. So, instead of repeating…her friends…we use the word them.

What are the indirect object pronouns? (to, for me) (to, for us) (to, for you) (to, for you guys) (to, for him/her/you) them, you all)

Ejemplos: Ella llama a mí.* (D) Ella _____ llama. Yo lavo los platos. (D) Yo _____ lavo. Yo doy el regalo a ella. (I) Yo _____ doy (a ella). *Remember that when a person is a direct or indirect object you must use “a personal.”

With infinitives When there are _______ in a row and one is an infinitive the DOP may be attached to the end of the infinitive. Ejemplo: Nosotros tenemos que lavar el carro. Nosotros tenemos que ________.

With the progressive When you use the progressive tenses the DOP may be _________ to the end of the gerundio (-ando/-iendo) and an accent placed on the _____________ syllable. Ejemplo: Tú estás comiendo las cerezas. Tú estás ________________. *accent needed (ándo/iéndo/yéndo)

Placement Rules ________ the conjugated verb Attached to the end of the _______________ ____________ to the end of the present participle (gerundio, “-ando” or “-iendo”) with an accent on the 3rd to the last syllable. *Note: Placement rules are the same for DOPs and IOPs! 

Los pronombres dobles de complemento directo e indirecto Double Object Pronouns-- Know the 5 rules!!!

IOPs DOPs Me (to, for me) Nos (to, for us) Me (me) Nos (us) Te (to, for you) Os (to, for you guys) Te (you) Os (you guys) Le (to, for him/her/ you) Les (to, for them, you all) Lo (it/him/you) Los (them/you all) La (it/her/you) Las (them/you all)

Rule #1- Don’t forget your _______ card (indirect goes before direct!) When you have a direct and indirect object pronoun in the same sentence, the indirect object pronoun always comes ________. Example: They give the books to me. ______ object _______ object They give them to me. DOP IOP Ellos ____ _____ dan. IOP DOP

Rule #2-“___” it…don’t “___” it! (change le/les____ ) If the first pronoun is le or les, you must change it to _____ before placing it in front of a DOP. Example: She bought the present for Anita. direct object indirect object She bought it for her. DOP IOP Ella ____ _____ compró. IOP DOP se

Rule #3-Accents with infinitives if there is a double O.P. When there are 2 verbs in a row and one is an infinitive the pronouns may be attached to the _____ of the infinitive with an accent on the vowel at the end of the infinitive (ár/ ér/ ír) Ejemplo: Tenemos que lavar el carro para mi padre. Tenemos que ____________. la vár se lo

Rule #4- Accents with progressive forms When you use the progressive tenses the double pronouns may be attached to the end of the gerundio (-ando/-iendo) and an accent placed on (ándo/iéndo/yéndo) Ejemplo: Estabas escribiendo la carta para mí. Estabas ________________. re ci bién do me la

Ejemplos: El mesero le dio la cuenta a Laura. El mesero ___ ____ dio (a ella). Yo te compré un regalo para ti. Yo ___ ____ compré.

Indirect ???answer (a él/ella) lele (a Ud.) leme (a ellos/ellas) lesles (a Uds.) lesnos mete teme nosles (a Uds.)
