El presente progresivo The present progressive
Hasta ahora: Up until now we have been using the simple present tense for both simple present and present progressive expressions: Yo voy I go, I´m going Él sale He leaves, He is leaving Nosotros conversamos We chat, We´re chatting Mis primos comen My cousins eat/are eating
El presente progresivo Spanish, however, also has a present progressive tense which expresses an action in progress at the moment. The present progressive uses “estar” and gerund (-ing) form of another verb. ¿Estás hablando con Marta en este momento? -Sí, está llegando al aeropuerto. Are you taking to Marta right now? Yes, she is arriving at the airport.
Los gerundios -AR (hablar) -ANDO (hablando) -ER (comer) -IENDO (comiendo) -IR (escribir) -IENDO (escribiendo) The –AR, -ER and –IR drop and –ANDO or – IENDO are added. ¿Qué estás bebiendo? Estoy bebiendo un café grande. ¿Qué están escribiendo los niños? Están escribiendo una carta a su abuela.
Irregular gerunds Pedir (ask for/order) Pidiendo Decir (to say) Diciendo Servir (to serve) Sirviendo Dormir (to sleep) Durmiendo. Traer (to bring) Trayendo Leer (to read) Leyendo Creer (to believe) Creyendo.
-ER verbs which have a double e, or an ae (traer, leer, creer, etc) change the I in IENDO to a Y. ¿Qué estás leyendo? Estoy leyendo el periódico. ¿Qué está trayendo tu hermano? Está trayendo una pizza grande.
Things to note In Spanish the present progressive is used less frequently than in English. It is never used to refer to future events: (I´m working tomorrow– Mañana trabajo) Also certain verbs such as “Ser” “Estar” “Ir” and “Venir” are rarely used in the progressive form.
