Mini lección: Los verbos reflexivos Please take out a blank sheet of paper and take notes about the mini grammar lesson. These will come in handy as we continue to work with conjugating these and will help you when reviewing for the test!

What are reflexive verbs? Reflexive verbs indicate that people do something TO or FOR themselves. For example, washing one's hands and brushing one's teeth are reflexive actions because the person doing the action is also receiving the action. You typically know that a verb is reflexive if its infinitive form (unconjugated) ends with the letters se. AFEITARSE ACOSTARSE ARREGLARSE EL PELO BAÑARSE

PINTARSE LAS UÑAS CEPILLARSE LOS DIENTES PONSERSE VESTIRSE (I-E) CORTARSE EL PELO SECARSE DESPERTARSE (E-IE) Prepararse – To prepare yourself, to get ready LEVANTARSE

How do we conjugate reflexive verbs? 1st: We will need to conjugate the infinitive verb as usual (look at whether the ending is -ar/-er/-ir and find the appropriate endings according to the subject). 2nd: We will need to know the reflexive pronouns in Spanish. These are: (YO)                             ME (NOSOTROS)                NOS (TÚ)                            TE (VOSOTROS)                  OS (ÉL/ELLA/UD.)          SE (ELLOS/ELLAS/UDS.)     SE

How does it work? Step by step... 1. Conjugate your verb normally, ignoring the se for now. Look at the ending and choose the appropriate ending according to subject. Example: (Yo) lavarse This verb ends in –ar and I want to conjugate it to indicate that I wash myself. I would drop the –ar ending and add –o. This leaves you with lavo. 2. Insert the reflexive pronoun BEFORE the conjugated verb. Yo me lavo —I wash myself

Careful: Some verbs can be reflexive and non-reflexive. A verb is used in its non-reflexive form if the action is being done to SOMEONE or SOMETHING ELSE.  ¿Quién recibe la acción? La mujer se baña. El niño baña al perro.

Also… When you have two verbs together, remember that only the first one is conjugated (see p. 71 to review this if you are unsure what this looks like) With reflexive verbs you can attach the reflexive pronoun before the conjugated verb or after the infinitive, as one word.  Ex:  Me quiero cepillar los dientes.           Quiero cepillarme los dientes. ¿Te prefieres pintar las uñas o arreglar el pelo? ¿Prefieres pintarte las uñas o arreglarte el pelo? ¿Ana se va a cortar el pelo? ¿Ana va a cortarse el pelo? ¿Nos vamos a preparar para la fiesta? ¿Vamos a prepararnos para la fiesta?
