Its time to celebrate Christmas! ¡Es tiempo de celebrar la Navidad! ¡MERRY CHRISTMAS!¡FELIZ NAVIDAD!

Christmas in Spain is a little bit longer than Christmas celebrated in most other countries all over the world. La Navidad en España es un poco más larga que en la mayoría de los países del mundo.

Christmas begin at the beginning of the month of December, as we begin to decorate the streets with colourful lights with Christmas motifs, such as snow flakes, bells, bows,, or with words that celebrate Christmas. La Navidad comienza a principios del mes de diciembre, cuando decoramos las calles con luces de colores de motivos navideños como copos de nieve, campanas… o con palabras que celebran la Navidad.

On the 8th December we celebrate the Immaculadas day (Feast of the Immaculate Conception) which marks the beginning of the religious Christmas celebrations. El 8 de diciembre celebramos el día de la Inmaculada Concepción que marca el comienzo de la fiesta religiosa de la Navidad.

On the 22nd December people all over Spain never stay far from a TV set or radio as the Christmas lottery is drawn over a period of many hours. Everybody in Spain buys tickets for this lottery in the hope of winning El Gordo (the fat one) and the winning number usually means that a good number of people from the same village become a lot better off overnight. Besides the big three prizes there are thousands of smaller prizes shared by people all over Spain. El 22 de diciembre la gente de toda España no se aleja de un televisor o de una radio porque la lotería de Navidad se emite durante algunas horas. Toda la gente compra billetes de lotería con la esperanza de ganar El Gordo lo que significa que un buen número de gente de la misma ciudad serán un poco más ricos. Además de los tres grandes premios también hay miles de premios más pequeños que se reparten por toda España.

Christmas has five very distinct celebrations. First, Christmas' Eve on 24th December, Christmas itself on 25th December, New Year's Eve on 31st December, New years day on 1st January and Three Wise Men's Day on 6th January. La Navidad tiene cinco celebraciones distintas. Primero, la Nochebuena el 24 de diciembre, la Navidad propiamente dicha el 25 de diciembre, la Nochevieja el 31 de diciembre, el día de Año Nuevo el 1 de enero y el Día de Reyes el 6 de enero.

We spend Christmas' Eve and Christmas day with our family and it is normal to make a feast, with a traditional recipe, eat nougat and sing Christmas carols. Christmas, even though in many families this fast is changing, is not the time to exchange gifts. But we'll get to that later. So, you may say that Santa's are not as busy as the Kings (Baltasar, Gaspar, and Melcior) are! Pasamos la Nochebuena y el día de Navidad con nuestra familia y es normal hacer una fiesta, con una receta tradicional, comer turrón y cantar villancicos. El día de Navidad, aunque en muchas familias esto está cambiando, no es el momento de intercambiar regalos. Vendrán más tarde. Podrías decir que Santa Claus no está tan ocupado como los Reyes.

We celebrate New Years Eve with the family at home, in restaurants, clubs, and other places where we also meet friends. We drink cava. This is Spanish Champagne and it is excellent! We also eat the twelve grapes at the same time of the 12 clock gongs at 12:00 am on 1st January. This is a fun and yet tricky thing because we try to eat and swallow twelve grapes in twelve seconds! Can you imagine? Nevertheless, the idea behind it is that if you are able to eat all twelve in twelve seconds, you will have a prosperous new year. People meet in La Puerta del Sol in Madrid because there is a clock on top the La Puerta which gives the official time to everybody. We can also watch it on TV. Next day, New Years Day, families have a special lunch too, even though young people sleep during all day! Celebramos la Nochevieja con la familia en casa, en restaurantes, clubes y otros lugares donde también nos encontramos con los amigos. Bebemos cava. Esto es un vino espumoso español y es excelente. También comemos las doce uvas al tiempo de los doce golpes de reloj justo a las 12:00 en el comienzo del día 1 de enero. Esto es muy divertido porque tratamos de comer doce uvas en doce segundos. ¿Te lo puedes imaginar? No importa, la idea es que si eres capaz de comértelas todas en doce segundos, tendrás un próspero año nuevo. La gente se encuentra en La Puerta del Sol en Madrid porque hay un reloj que da la hora oficial para todos los españoles. También lo podemos ver en televisión. Al día siguiente, el día de Año Nuevo las familias también tienen una comida especial, incluso aunque la gente joven se pase durmiendo todo el día.

Children go to bed early on 5th January because The Three Wise Men cross the night from home to home placing gifts and pastries in each house. They clean their shoes, put some nougat and some milk in a plate for the kings and some water in a bucket for the camels. This is the Feast of the Epiphany, on 6th January, when the Three Kings arrived in Bethlehem. For Spanish children this is the most important day of the year when they wake up to find that The Three Wise Men have left gifts for them in their house. Santa may leave them a token gift on 25th but the Three Kings are their favourites, especially Baltasar who rides a donkey and is the one believed to leave the gifts. During the day of 6th the Three Kings continue their good work and are seen distributing gifts to children in hospitals all over Spain. Los niños se van a la cama pronto el día 5 de enero porque los Tres Reyes Magos van durante la noche de casa en casa llevando regalos. Los niños limpian sus zapatos, dejan un poco de turrón y un poco de leche para los Reyes y un poco de agua para los camellos. Esta es la fiesta de la Epifanía, el 6 de enero, cuando los tres Reyes Magos llegaron a Belén. Para los niños españoles este es el día más importante del año. Se levantan par buscar los regalos que los Tres Reyes Magos les han dejado en su casa. Santa les ha podido dejar un regalito el día 25 de diciembre pero los Tres Reyes son sus favoritos, especialmente Baltasar. Durante este día los tres Reyes continúan su buen trabajo distribuyendo regalos a los niños en hospitales por toda España.

Pablo picasso school celebrated a Christmas party in which all its members participated. The Three Wise Men came and visited us. We made a Christmas tree with card puppets. Children in the creativity class built the Kings carriages. We also danced our pois. Then we went to the gym and they gave us a present to all the children at school. We also had breakfast all together there. Lets see the photos. El colegio Pablo Picasso celebró la Navidad con una gran fiesta en la que participaron todos los miembros de la comunidad educativa. Los Reyes Magos nos hicieron una visita y nos preparamos muy bien para recibirles. Confeccionamos un árbol de Navidad con muñecos de cartón decorados. En el taller de creatividad construyeron las carrozas de los Reyes. También bailamos las cariocas y después nos dieron los regalos a todos los del cole en el gimnasio. Además desayunamos allí todos juntos. Vamos a ver las fotos.

IN THE CLASSROOM Children in the fourth grade made an Advent calendar. First they decorated a paper house I got from Tomlitoo.com in Internet. Then they cut out, fold and glue the paper. Finally they put some sweeties and small presents into the house. They numbered the houses and made the Advent calendar with all of them. We sang the Christmas carol Im dreaming of a white Christmas all together and change the house with a friend. They coloured some Christmas cards to send to their family and they also coloured the pieces of a very big Christmas puzzle I made from a picture in a Christmas magazine and the drawings of the Merry Christmas letters.

Children in the fifth and sixth grade made Advent calendars with Christmas crackers. First they collected the materials to make them: a cardboard, crepe paper, glue, scissors, two ribbons, stickers to decorate, and some sweeties and small presents to put into the cracker. I gave them a paper with some written orders to make the Christmas cracker: 1. Cut out a piece of cardboard. 2. Cut out a piece of crepe paper. 3. Roll up and glue the cardboard. 4. Glue the crepe paper onto the cardboard. 5. Put sweeties or small presents into the cracker. 6. Close the cracker with two ribbons. 7. Decorate the cracker. Then they numbered their Christmas crackers and build up an Advent calendar. Finally we sang the Christmas carol Deck the hall all together and change the cracker with a friend.
