Review of direct and indirect object prounouns Let’s get a student to review us on direct and indirect object pronouns (5 participation points for doing it). Include: What is a direct object What is an indirect object What are the pronouns for each Where are the 2 places the pronouns can go (and when each is acceptable) 5 points to another student who gives us a sample sentence.

Reflexive Pronouns A reflexive pronoun is used when the person ______ the action is also either the direct or indirect object. Why does this matter? --Avoids confusion (and embarrassment) --Think about the sentence “After lifting weights with a friend, Sr. Lobos bathes.” Here’s the problem… doing

Reflexive Pronouns Here’s the problem… Spanish prefers object pronouns be used when there’s a direct or indirect object. The pronoun referring to Sr. Lobos is “lo,” the same one used for any “he,” including the friend he exercised with. This means, unless we use a special pronoun to indicate Sr. Lobos is bathing himself, your listener could think he is bathing his friend, and that’s a totally different situation.

Reflexive Pronouns What are our reflexive pronouns… Me Nos Te Skip-----skip Se The only thing that changes is the usted/él/ella form-----the only form where there could be confusion Think of these as the English pronouns ending in –self (myself, himself, etc.)

Key Things to Note Spanish is obsessed with the reflexive. Don’t be shocked with it’s used at times we wouldn’t use a –self pronoun in English Ejemplo: Yo me baño todos los días. I bathe everyday. (In English it would sound weird and unnecessary to say “I bathe myself,” we kind of assume that part, but in Spanish they prefer to state it. Just get used to it.

Key Things to Note Your book, dictionaries, etc. will give you reflexive verbs with “se” attached to the end. That’s how you know it should be used reflexively. The “se” doesn’t stay. Ejemplo: bañarse Yo me baño When you conjugate, take the “se” off and put it before the conjugated verb, or attached to an infinitive (or attached to a command), just like all object pronouns. If the subject isn’t usted, él, or ella, the se WILL change (Yo voy a ducharme.)

Key Things to Note Reflexive verbs aren’t always reflexive. If you wash yourself, or bathe yourself, it is reflexive (you’re doing it and getting it done to you) If you wash your car or bathe an infant, you are doing the action to something or someone else, and it isn’t reflexive. (and would take normal pronouns)

Key Things to Note If you use a reflexive verb to talk about what you did to one of your body parts Ejemplo: I washed my face. you won’t use a possessive with the body part. Ejemplo: Me lavé la cara. This is like how we wouldn’t say “I hit myself in my face,” and would more often say “I hit myself in the face.” --The fact it’s reflexive tells us it was yours.

On your whiteboard, complete… Me gusta estar limpio.

On your whiteboard, complete…
