Using Verbs

Verbs: are words that express an action or state of being.

Infinitives the most basic verb form in all languages. In English, the verb is always preceded by the preposition “to”: to speak, to read, to write Verbs in the infinitive form indicate what an action is, but do not indicate anything about who is doing the action or at what point in time the action is taking place.

Infinitives * A verb in the infinitive form means the verb changes for every subject pronoun. a subject and verb must agree in person (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) and number (singular or plural).

Conjugation Verb conjugation = When you change the verb so it can agree with the subject pronoun (yo, tú, él, ella, usted, nosotros, nosotras, vosotros, vosotras, ellos, ellas, ustedes).

Remember * Whenever you see the word tú or usted in a question the question is being asked to you. If they are in a sentence they are talking about you.

ser = to be When to use the verb “ser”: Name: Yo soy Amanda. Yo soy Roberto Nationalities: La señora Vázquez es puertorriqueña. Origin: Ustedes son de Elmwood Park. Physical features: Manuel es feo. Ellas son guapas. Personality: Amanda es cómica. Nosotros somos perezosos.

ser = to be Telling time: Son las dos. Es la una. Professions: Yo soy profesora. Ellos son doctores. Ownership: El libro es de María. Las plumas son de Ricardo. What something is made of: El lápiz es de madera (wood) Equal (=): Tres más uno son (=) cuatro. Cero más uno es (=) uno.

ser yo = soy tú = eres él = es ella = es usted = es nosotros/ as = somos vosotros/as = sois ellos = son ellas = son ustedes = son

Notas Difference when writing a sentence and a question: When writing a sentence the subject or subject pronoun goes first, followed by the verb.   Ejemplos: Nosotros (subject pronoun) somos (verb) inteligentes (adjective). Ellos son mecánicos. Juan y Alberto (subject) son (verb) hermanos.

Notas When writing a question all you must do is switch the subject pronoun/ subject with the verb. Ejemplos: ¿Es (verb) ella (subject pronoun) alta o baja? ¿Son ellos hermanos? ¿Son (verb) Julia y María (subject) hermanas?

Notas Subject pronouns may be omitted from a sentence in a question. When the subject pronoun is omitted the verb replaces the meaning of both words.

Ejemplos: Are you tall or short? Is she honest? Are they honest? ¿Eres tú alto o bajo? ¿Eres alto o bajo? ¿Es ella honesta? ¿Es honesta? ¿Son honestos? Soy un alumno nuevo. Eres alto. ¿Eres alto? Are you tall or short? Is she honest? Are they honest? I am a new student. You are tall. Are you tall?

Notas Answering a question when subject pronoun is ustedes: When answering a question that has the subject pronoun ustedes in it, you must use the subject pronoun nosotros in your answer. (Or reverse)

Ejemplo: ¿Son ustedes alumnos buenos? Sí, nosotros somos alumnos buenos. No, nosotros no somos alumnos buenos. ¿Somos nosotros inteligentes? Sí, ustedes son inteligentes. No, ustedes no son inteligentes.

Preguntas Write the correct form of “ser” according to the subject pronouns and nouns: tú = Carmen y yo = vosotras = ellos = Vanessa = yo =

Preguntas ¿_____ tú inteligente? Sí, _____ muy inteligente. ¿ _____ Fernando alto y fuerte? Sí, él _____ alto y fuerte. ¿ _____ amigas con Verónica. Sí, _____ amigas. ¿ _____ Carla y Mónica simpáticas? Sí, ellas _____ simpáticas.
