Español 2: Saber vs. Conocer
Transcripción de la presentación:

SABER vs CONOCER To know or to know?

SABER Is used in Spanish for knowing facts, information, and skills. Tú sabes la capital de Venezuela. Ellos no saben cuando tenemos el examen. Nosotros sabemos los artes marciales.

SABER SÉ* SABEMOS SABES SABÉIS SABE SABEN

SABER Did you catch the irregular “YO” form? This is a very common mistake students make… SABO IS NOT A VERB FORM! Do you remember how to say “I don’t know” in Spanish? ¡No sé! Thinking about this will help remind you of its irregular YO form.

CONOCER Means to know in terms of familiarity. I know Marco, because he is in my class. I know Target, because I shop there with my mom. I know Springfield, because I grew up there. I know Lady Gaga’s music because I listen to it.

CONOCER CONOZCO* CONOCEMOS CONOCES CONOCÉIS CONOCE CONOCEN

CONOCER Also has an irregular YO form. There are some other related verbs that work like CONOCER in the YO. (Introducir, Conducir, Producir) It’s a pronunciation change that makes the verb sound better.

How do I choose? Sometimes you just have to think about the sentence. Sometimes there are some “clues” you can use to help choose the right one. If a verb follows the blank, it’s a skill.  SABER EJ: Martín SABE hablar inglés. If an a + person follows the blank, it’s familiarity.  CONOZCO a Hugo.

Practiquemos en un papelito Nosotros _______ jugar al ajedrez. Tú _________ los partes de una planta. Yo no _____ a Martín. Ellos _____ la ciudad de Chicago bien. ¿Ud. ______ cuando es el examen? ¿______ tú bailar el tango? Nosotros ____ el menu de Subway. Vosotros no ____ la respuesta correcta. Eva es estúpida, no ___ nada. 10. Yo no ___ donde está mi tarea.
