Short & Long forms of the Possessives

The short forms of the possessives: mi, misnuestro/a/os/as tu, tusvuestro/a/os/assu, sus

The long forms of the possessives? mío/a/os/asnuestro/a/os/as tuyo/a/os/asvuestro/a/os/as suyo/a/os/assuyo/a/os/as

Use the short forms of the possessives… when the noun FOLLOWS it. EX: mi perronuestra casa tu gatovuestra tarea su carrosu hermana

Use the long forms of the possessives… when the noun DOES NOT follow it. EXCEPTION: in a QUESTION! EX: El carro es mío. Or Es mío. ¿Es mío el carro?

Possessive adjs agree with what is possessed (noun) NOT the possessor (person). EX: Their house. Su casa. The house is his. La casa es suya. When clarity is needed, use: La casa es de él.

A definite article (el/la/los/las) is used with the long possessive if the verb is TENER or ESTAR : EX: (la tarea) Where is his? OR Where is the one that is his? ¿Dónde está la suya? Or Do you have his? ¿Tienes la suya?

(el perro) my dog mi perro

(el perro) It is my dog. Es mi perro.

(el perro) It is mine. Es mío.

(el perro) The dog is mine. El perro es mío.
