The Preterite Tense The preterite tense is also known as the past tense. You use it when you are talking about actions or events that have occurred and completed in the past.

Preterite Tense of –ar Verbs Form the preterite tense of an –ar verb by removing the last two letters from the infinitive and attaching the following endings: -ar -é -amos -aste -asteis -ó -aron

Examples of Regular Preterite Tense –ar Verbs lavar lavé lavamos lavaste lavasteis lavó lavaron hablar hablé hablamos hablaste hablasteis habló hablaron llamar llamé llamamos llamaste llamasteis llamó llamaron

Regular Preterite Verbs Change Some regular verbs that end in: –car (buscar, explicar, sacar, tocar) -gar (apagar, colgar, jugar, llegar) -zar (empezar) require a spelling change in only the yo form of the preterite in order to maintain the original sound of the infinitive.
