Boot Verbs (Stem-Changing Verbs) Sra. Medeles Herget Middle School Página 198 y 199

Hmm…Boot verbs?? Remember that in any language, there are always grammar points that break the rule!!! el mapa – why is it not la mapa? el agua – again…why isnt it la agua? Many times there is not a reason why the rule is broken, we simply have to memorize!

So, what is a boot verb? A boot verb is simply a verb that changes its spelling in the middle of the conjugation. You will find out later why we call it a Boot verb.

E IE Boot Verbs Today, we will learn about ONE type of boot or stem-changing verb. In the middle of the verb, there will be an E that changes to IE. The endings are the same as the regular –ar, -er, or –ir endings in the present tense.

Lets give it a try! Ok…QUERER (to want) is an e ie boot verb. Watch how it changes! Which are the only two that did not change spelling? Thats right – nosotros and vosotros! quieroqueremos quieresqueréis quierequieren

I still dont get why its called a BOOT verb!?! Heres why… When the verb is conjugated, the forms that change spelling fit inside of a boot! quieroqueremos quieresqueréis quierequieren

You try it! What does CERRAR mean? To close It is also an e ie boot verb. Try conjugating it! (Remember it is an AR verb so use AR endings!) cierrocerramos cierrascerráis cierracierran

More practice… The other e ie verbs you know are: Empezar = _____________________ Entender = _____________________ Pensar = _______________________ Preferir = _______________________ To start/begin To understand To think To prefer
