hace + the period of time + que + the present tense In Spanish if someone asks, “How long has this been going on?” or “How long has it been?” you answer with the verb hacer: hace + the period of time + que + the present tense

hace + the period of time + que + the present tense Ay, Elena, hace cuatro años que quiero venir a tu programa. Oh, Elena, I’ve been wanting to come to your program for four years. Ay, doctor, hace una hora que lo espero. Oh, doctor, I’ve been waiting for you for an hour.

¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + the present tense? If you’re the one doing the asking, do the same thing, but use cuánto tiempo in your sentence. ¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + the present tense? ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que quieres venir al programa? How long have you been wanting to come to the program?

Hace un año que fui a Puerto Rico. If you are talking about the past, use the preterite and hace to say ago. hace + the period of time + que + the preterite Hace un año que fui a Puerto Rico. I went to Puerto Rico a year ago.

Preterite Verb Endings (Past tense) -ar verb endings -é -aste -ó -amos -asteis -aron -er & -ir verb endings -í -iste ió -imos -isteis -ieron

La conocí hace tres meses. To say ago, you can also put the verb first. When the verb comes first, you do not need que. the preterite + hace+ the period of time La conocí hace tres meses. I met her three months ago.

¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + verb? ¿Hace cuánto tiempo que + verb? And finally… When asking a question, you can use either: ¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + verb? Or ¿Hace cuánto tiempo que + verb? Both mean the same.
