The present continuous tense is used for… When? The present continuous tense is used for… Something that is happening at the moment of speaking or writing. It is similar to the English –ing form (the gerund). Examples in English would be: I am watching the TV. I am playing the piano with my brother.

To form the present continuous tense in Spanish you follow three steps… 1. Use the present tense of ‘estar’: 2. Take the infinitive and take off the infinitive ending. hablar hablar comer comer vivir vivir 3. Then add –ando ( –ar verbs) and –iendo (–er and –ir) to the stem. habl + ando com + iendo viv + iendo I You (sing) He She We You (pl) They Yo Tú Él Ella Nosotros Vosotros Ellos estoy estás está estamos estáis están X X X stem stem stem

Examples of the Present Continuous. Eg. I am speaking with my mum by Skype. Estoy hablando con mi madre por Skype. (yo) (tú) (él/ella/usted) (nosotros/as) (vosotros/as) (ellos/ellas/ustedes) estoy estás está estamos estáis están + hablando (hablar) comiendo (comer) saliendo (salir)

Now have a go at putting the following verbs into the correct form of the present continuous tense. Show how you work it out. Eg: We are listening (escuchar) Estamos + escuchando = estamos escuchando I am speaking (hablar) We are living (vivir) He is eating (comer) You are (sing, inf) leaving (dejar) They are doing (hacer) Estoy hablando Estamos viviendo Está comiendo Estás dejando Están haciendo Estar -AR -ER -IR Estoy Stem + -ANDO -IENDO Estás Está Estamos Estáis Están

ANSWERS I am copying They are writing You are playing We are having She is resisting You are considering

You (s) are cutting Estás cortando We are painting Estamos pintando Now translate the following verbs. Remember to choose the correct form of estar and then conjugate the verb in the steps you have already used. You (s) are cutting We are painting You (p) are studying She is travelling They are washing I am downloading Estás cortando Estamos pintando Estáis estudiando Está viajando Están lavando Estoy descargando DESAFIO: Write a compound sentence in Spanish using 2 of them.

What would the following be in Spanish? Estar -AR -ER -IR Estoy Stem + ANDO + IENDO Estás Está Estamos Estáis Están I You (sing, inf) He/she/it We You(pl,inf) They Use ONLY your verb ending table to help you if you need to HABLAR We are speaking – COMER she is eating – SALIR You are (sing) going out – Estamos hablando Está comiendo EMPACAR they are packing – Estás saliendo VIVIR You are (pl) living – Están empacando ESCRIBIR I am writing – Estáis viviendo REACCIONAR I am reacting – JUGAR You are (pl) playing – Estoy escribiendo Estoy reaccionando Estáis jugando

Some verbs are irregular (they don’t follow this pattern) and you just have to learn them. For example: Ir (to go) Venir (to come) decir (to say/tell) yo tú él/ella nosotros vosotros ellos/ellas Estoy yendo Estoy viniendo Estoy diciendo Estás yendo Estás viniendo Estás diciendo Está yendo Está viniendo Está diciendo Estamos yendo Estamos viniendo Estamos diciendo Estáis yendo Estáis viniendo Estáis diciendo Están yendo Están viniendo Están diciendo Leer (to read) Dormir (to sleep) Estoy leyendo Estoy durmiendo Estás leyendo Estás durmiendo Está leyendo Está durmiendo Estamos leyendo Estamos durmiendo Estáis leyendo Estáis durmiendo Están leyendo Están durmiendo
