I. Formal commands You will use Formal usted/Ustedes Commands to tell someone to do or not to do something in a respectful way. Commands require a change in verb endings.

How? How? How? Here’s how: Present tense of Yo form verbs Drop the ending –o Add an “a” for the infinitive ends with –er or –ir Add an “e” for the infinitive ends with –ar Add an “n” in addition to the conjugated verbs above when you give commands on more than one person.

Examples Pruebe el ajo picante y la cebolla fresco. Hieva el aceite y la agua con tus amigos . Desayune todas mañana antés de ir la escuela.

Negative command Rule: Add no before the verb to make commands negative. Examples No añada más azúcar en la agua. No fria la cebolla y la lechuga.

examples Vaya a la escuela inmediatamente No dé dinero para escuela (Go to school immediately) No dé dinero para escuela (Don’t take money to school). No esté deprimido. (Don’t be depressed)

II. Formal Commands with pronouns Rules: In affirmative commands, you attach object pronouns to the end of the verb. (Note) The stressed vowel carries an accent when a pronoun is attached to an affirmative command of two syllables or more.

Pronoun placement with commands Affirmative La cena es muy delicioso, cómanla ahora. Mézclelas en el vaso por tu hermano. No pruébenlas. Las manzanas son ascos.

Negative commands with pronouns Rules: you place object pronouns before the verb and after no. (note) Negative No le diga esó. (don’t tell her that) No lo hieva. (don’t boil it.) No las mezclen. (Don’t mix them.)

III. Informal commands You use informal commands to tell someone you are familiar with to do something or not to do something.

Affirmative Tú commands Rules: regular affirmative tú commands are the same as the usted/él/ella form of a verb in the present tense.

Example(Regular) Present Tense El actor filma la película y edita los efectos especiales. Affirmative tú command Filma la película y edita los efectos especiales.

Negative tú commands -ar verbs –o changes to –es Rules: you form negative tú commands with the yo form of verbs in the present tense. -ar verbs –o changes to –es -er, ir verbs –o changes to -as

Informal Commands with pronouns Pronoun placement for informal commands is the same with Formal commands. Examples: Filmála todos las días. No se lo des. Practicalos después de comer cena.
