El cielo estaba nublado y oscuro. Habían relámpagos y truenos.

Imperfecto Used for age, time, dates in the past. La princesa tenía 15 años y era muy bonita. Era la una de la mañana cuando el malvado entró el palacio. La fecha de la boda era el 6 de enero.
El pretérito y el imperfecto… The preterite and imperfect often occur in the same sentence. The imperfect is used to describe what was going on… and the preterite indicates completed actions within that period of time.
Hacia un viento muy fuerte y de repente, la ventana se rompió.
