2 Uses of Preterite: past events with a definite beginning/ending
complete/finished past actions actions which occurred at a specific moment in time (isolated actions)

3 Preterite Examples: Rosa escribió un e-mail.
Completed a specific action Carlos jugó al fútbol ayer. Specific action at a specific time

4 Uses of Imperfect to express what was happening (was/were + “-ing”), used to happen, or happened repeatedly in the past. simultaneous actions in the past (mientras: while) WARMD W-WEATHER & TIME (hacía sol, llovía, Eran las tres, etc.) A – AGE (tenía 5 años cuando…) R – REPEATED (Iba a Florida frecuentemente.) M – mental descriptions (Estar w/ conditions/emotions; mind process verbs like creer, pensar, querer, saber) D - Descriptions (tenía pelo rubio, eran atléticos)

5 Los pájaros cantaban mientras los amigos daban un paseo.
-what was happening, (“were singing”); simultaneous action. Vivíamos en Miami. -describes something that we “used to” do Tomás a menudo llegaba tarde. -describes something that happened repeatedly in the past. Cuando tenías 8 años, eras rubio y tenías los ojos azules. -describing what a person or thing was like in the past and describing age. Quería comprar un coche. -describes a state of mind in the past; uses the mind process verb “querer”. Eran las cinco. –time in the past Imperfect Examples:

6 PRETERITE AND IMPERFECT TOGETHER!
Use the imperfect to show what was going on (imperfect) when there was an interrupting action (preterite) Yo estudiaba cuando María me llamó. I was studying (ongoing) when Maria called me (interrupting action) This may happen when describing circumstances and conditions (imperfect) surrounding a specific action or event (preterite). Estábamos tristes cuando perdimos el partido. We were sad (condition) when we lost (spec. act.) the game.
