Preterite and imperfect in storytelling The preterite and the imperfect often occur in the same sentence. The imperfect describes what was going on and the preterite indicates completed actions within that setting. The same occurs with the past progressive (pasado progresivo) and the preterite. Había mucha gente en el palacio cuando habló el rey. La reina estaba en el campo cuando el hechicero la traicionó. Estaba leyendo un cuento de hadas cuando se fue la luz.
